Songkran

Hi all,

I’ve been reading these boards for a little while now and have enjoyed reading everybody’s different experiences. I wish I had found this forum before I went for my first time.. it would of saved me from making a lot of mistakes..

Anyways I wonder if anyone can help by telling me just how busy Patong gets at Songkran.
The first time I went to LOS which was during my gap year was on the same day as Songkran 06 started (totally unknown to me.. imagine the surprise!!) and I was in Bangkok for the 3 days and had my hotels already booked so to me it didn’t seem all that busy. However I can imagine with Patong being was smaller it could get pretty busy. So what I really need to find out is it wise to book hotels etc before I get there or will I still be able to find rooms???

Cheers,
Chris.

Hi K1 -

Welcome - regarding Songkran - best place to enjoy it is Chaing Mai as goes on there for about 10 days.

Patong (Phuket) is great choice if you want mix the water mayhem with some beach life and much better here than in Bangkok or Pattaya - leave the hard core city action for later.

Should be ok with hotels as so many new hotels gone up recently - have fun where ever you end up.

Cheers

K2

Songkran is not particularly busy from a tourist's destination perspective. In fact, it is a time when many Thais go back home to visit family. IMHO, it is the worst time to visit Thailand as the heat is stifling, less girls around... and being drenched with water everywhere you go is not necessarily "fun". I think you should have no probs getting a hotel. That time of year is the second stage of low season.

???

Ok...well its all a matter of how you want to see things...Yes I would agree some of the girls do go home for the holiday, but plenty of girls are around..always always..

Hotels...book early is a good idea and I totally disagree that songkran is either slow or non fun...number one the water day is really only a day of hardcore action...can be avoided no problems if your a bit conservative..day time action is great fun...staying indoors at night is solid advice if you wish to stay dry....join in the fun and don't sweat the small stuff.

Songkran the thai way is no problem, the only people who tend to bastardize it is the farrang.

Plus side is lots of bm's around so you get a chance to met a lot of people from the board....great fun to be had, just purchase your water cannon early or bring your own from home

I didn't bastardize it, I said it was the worst time to visit (not necessarily a bad time to be had though). I had a plenty of fun during the one Songkran I visited, but with golf clubs flying out of my hand (sweat), jogging in 40C heat, breaking a sweat whenever outdoors, and as you say "staying indoors at night" to stay dry gets to be a bit taxing....

Touchy a bit there I would say...you assumed I was speaking about you when what I was talking about is the farrang are the ones who bastardize Songkran by there own actions.

You give the impression that its non stop water fights and its not...its one night of water and that's really about it. but you don't care for songkran but some us do...you say its hot..I say mai ben rai.

IJ...see you in RIO same same

I was there last Songkran, so was IJ and Heywood and many others. The hotels can be busy and especially if you have a particular choice you should book it now.

While some of the girls and thais go home, that has nothing to do with how many hotel rooms get booked, and there are a lot of tourists around.

Great time to go to the beach as the weather, while a little hot, is beautiful. And once you get soaked at night you will be happy that it is hot as your clothes will dry quickly.

yep, I bring a dry shirt in a waterproof bag for Soi Eric and then wear a T shirt everywhere else.

And I put my digital camera in a plastic bag.

That sounds like a very good idea, I have only been in Thailand once during Sonkran, staying at the Tawana Ramada hotel in Bangkok, I thought that all the people I passed were crazy, I got soaking wet just the short walk across to Patpong,
But then some nice bg explained what it was all about, the next 15 years I haven't had the chance to be there during Sonkran, I always go there Sep - Oct - Nov, but I think I'll try again.

Songkhran should really only be the one day of water festival but has been increased to 3 days in Patong, mainly by the farang. I love the celebration and all it stands for but 3 days for me now is a bit too much so will usually only go into Patong on the last day. For firstimers make sure you are there for all 3 days as its certainly an unforgetable experience.

So when exactly is Songkran? Is it the same date each year or is it like Easter and shifts according to some rights of passage of the stars, Sun or Moon?

Being an old fart, I for one, would like to miss it.

I loved last Songkran up country. Disagree about it being farangs who lengthen it - last year in Udon was 3 days of locals having fun (and me doing some of the driving) - once it was over went for a day to Laos not realising they went on a day longer ......... wasn't so much fun when everything is'nt in a waterproof bag and the 'water' has permanent dye in it but after a few adjustments was also fun

In Chiang Mai it goes on for at least 3 days. It is more fun when farang are in the minority.
