Hey all ( a bit long winded)
I've been reading the boards for a few weeks now as well as checking out some other sites and I have to say that after spending 80-100 hours searching for info on Thailand and Patong Beach these boards are the most informative site I've found. Kudos to the owner of the MTB for setting this up.
I'm arriving in Patong on January 21st for about 10 weeks and I had a few questions that I couldn't find answers to when I did a search. If anybody has any input on them your help is greatly appreciated.
1. Does anybody know anything about the "Thai Oriental Inn"? I was originally going to book for just a week and then find a place when I got over there but I was afraid everything was going to be sold out so I booked my whole stay there.
2A. What's a good way to politely refuse a BG who is trying hard but just doesn't do it for you?
2B. A good way to give shop keepers the hint you aren't interested without insulting them?
3. I was looking at a pair of Oakley's and the ones I like are going to cost me $160 USD. I usually don't do tell well with cheap imitations and I was wondering if I'd be able to get a good original pair of sunglasses and what I should expect to pay?
4. Should I worry about walking the 5-6 blocks from Bangla road to the TOI loaded(jumped, run over etc..)?
5. If money gets tight and I decide to go for Farang chicks instead of the beautiful Thai chicks where's a good place to go?
Again thanks for any input.

Hi Brewster and welcome to the board....
I cant answer all of our questions for you but
2A. I have a Thai girlfriend sorry. Would be my answer. perhaps there are better.
2B. No thank you firmly but politely and smile when you say that. Just keep saying no.
4. I would worry more about stumbling there
5. If money gets tight why go for a farang girl... with meals etc would cost you more than having a Thai girl but if your here for 10 weeks then maybe you will meet one and stay with her. Wait and see what happens.
Have a good trip.

UK thanks for the tips. My thinking with the Farang girls would be one night and done so no BF and no LT fees. Just a thought.
Unfortunately I have to make sure my rents are taken care of and can't bring over as much cash as I wanted to and I figured I could probably save 1-2000 baht by hooking up with the horny tourist chicks.

No. Next time at the time that you are going you should be able to find a good long stay apartment once you know the area. Songkran (mid April) and Christmas/New Years are the busy times.
2A. What's a good way to politely refuse a BG who is trying hard but just doesn't do it for you?
Like Steve said, just say No. If a lady from a bar grabs you as you walk by, just politely say no or tell her that you are meeting friends at another bar.
At the bar, just be polite and she will usually get the hint. If not it might be time to go to another bar.
2B. A good way to give shop keepers the hint you aren't interested without insulting them?
Just say Hi and walk past them. They will always be asking you if you want anything.
3. I was looking at a pair of Oakley's and the ones I like are going to cost me $160 USD. I usually don't do tell well with cheap imitations and I was wondering if I'd be able to get a good original pair of sunglasses and what I should expect to pay?
Petter answered this one.
4. Should I worry about walking the 5-6 blocks from Bangla road to the TOI loaded(jumped, run over etc..)?
Up to you. How drunk are you going to get? You can always have a seeing eye BG to get you back to your hotel.
5. If money gets tight and I decide to go for Farang chicks instead of the beautiful Thai chicks where's a good place to go?
They will probably actually cost you more per night and good luck finding them.
Again thanks for any input.[/quote]

To the guys selling the watches,DVDS etc say mai ow kap (no thanks/i don't want)...This they seem to understand... ...These are the best words (ever) to learn esp if you go to patts...
If you shake your head and say no they still keep coming back..After a while it really starts to annoy...
ps .Did you know that in Bulgaria if you shake your head it means yes and to nod means no...
Welcome to the board...

I'll definately have to remember that one. A buddy of mine just came back from los and said the vendors drove him crazy. BTW how's the street food in Patong? Good deal and resonably sanitary?

With the vendors smiling works really really well, if you fix them with a knowing grin as soon as they clock you it kinda sends them the message you know what the score is. Sometimes they won't even say anything at most they'll give a half-hearted "dvd/sexy movie/suit/whatever" line. A "mai ow kab" as falanger suggested will end it right there.
Really the people I see getting hassled the most are the ones who try to completely ignore them and those who start talking back excuses in english. With mai ow they not only understand better but it reinforces the image that you're not a noob tourist.

the street food is fine
the only thing is it may take a while for your body to get use to the bacteria in the food. thats all food
different countries have different bacterias, same as the states
so expect some runs and a bubblling stomach at 1st
if it gets real bad-a couple Cipro's, which basically cleans out your system will do-you can get them at any pharmacy

self employed. I have just a basic health insurence(major stuff) and it doesn't cover overseas. I looked at a couple and found one for under $100 with no deductable and $50k coverage. I was thinking about picking it up just to be safe.

Get medical insurance.. Hospitals are a great place to spend large amounts of money..
On the Oakleys.. Oakley gear is a bit more expensive than UK prices which would make it more expensive than US prices by a wide margin IMO.. I had a friend bring me some x metals over that were 275 in the states and 20k baht (550 ?? USD) here..

Wow, didn't expect it to be that expensive. I was looking at the x metals but didn't want to drop that much cash, decided to go with the half jackets instead.

It may well of come down a little as we have a pure oakley shop in central and I saw one going up on beach Rd.. That was a couple of years back and then they were sold through the optician / glasses shops..
I know down on bali a pair of Gas Cans were about 110 ish USD depending on lens combos but here they are more like 180 - 200..
I like the new gascan oildrum twitch styles just out..

I have an annual continuing travel insurance, which covers medical treatments, medicines but also damaga/lss of luggage as well as theft. In Holland it is pretty much normal taht people have it. It can be taken for an induvidual trip or (like I have) on a continuing bases, so you don't have to worry.
Next to that, may package also gives me financial compensation, in case I have to cancel or shorten my trip due to circumstances beyond my control.

I agree with falanger..........travel insurance is a must.....you never know what might happen.......whether it be food or alcohol poisoning or some stooge running you over with their scooter.
"Better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it"
As for the shop keepers, I found the annoying ones to be the ones of Indian appearance who were always trying to shake my hand. My solution was to put my hands in my pockets when I got near their shops.
And as for the BG's......simply point to yourself and say the word "keenio"
(probably spelt wrong) roughly it translates to mean that you're a tight ****.....and wont pay for them.
