Greetings all!

Hi Guys,

Long time reader, 1st time poster!

I have been to Phuket with the ex 2 years ago, but as she is no longer in the picture I thought I would go back and actually have some fun on this trip!

I booked the flight and will be there from 4th - 18th May 07. So far away and the days are really dragging... LOL. Any BM's going to be there during this time?

I was unaware of MTB on my first trip, but will definately be dropping in for a drink or 9 this time around!

My phone bill on the last trip was huge, so I thought I might get a pre-paid SIM while I am there and use it in my mobile. I am assuming this will be a more cost effective way of making calls, saving money to spend on ummm... errr... other things

Most of my questions have been answered by doing a search, however I'm not really sure how to go about arranging a SIM card when I get there. Any suggestions on what telco I should approach for a cheap SIM card and pre-paid plan?

On the last trip I don't recall passing by any mobile phone shops in Patong. I'm sure I did but they are not as obvious as the ones you find on every street corner here in Oz!

Cheers

Dan

Cool SIMS - simple

Welcome to the board.

There are plenty of telephone shops who will look after your needs. You can get a local card which you buy credit top ups with at any 7/11.

We got Sims from a small phone shop in Ocean Plaza, Bangla Rd. About 400baht from memory, including some calls. The young fella in the shop set it all up, no charge. We got one 2 one, but another company is Happy.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The advice on SIM cards is much appreciated

Haven't booked a place to stay yet, have narrowed it down to Jintana or C&N hotel as they are both about the same price, close to Bangla and the beach, have air con etc. Any suggestions on which is the best out of these 2?

You can buy a SIM card just about anywhere. 7-11 sells service from 1-2-Talk. As far as I remember the initial cost is 100-150 baht and includes 50 baht of talk time. You can then buy extra top off cards. SIM cards in Thailand have a relatively short life if not topped off with a fair amount of Baht. If memory serves me right you extend the life by 30 days for every 100 baht of top off. Also you need to make sure you phone is unlocked and can accept the SIM card. Personally I bought an extra phone on eBay that is unlocked and I use that where ever I buy temporary service.

Hi Dan,

I'm another Aussie new to this forum.

I'm off to Thailand for the first time at Easter. I will be without the ex so am looking forward to a fun time.

I'm used to visiting the traps around Sydney but they seem fairly tame compared to the likes of Nana and Cowboy.

Cheers,
Charles.

C&N might be a slightly nicer hotel decor wise, and is closer to Bangla, but for the same price, Jintana has a lovely pool. Very clean rooms but reception and hallways a little shabby. Nice staff and safe deposit box behind reception.

Thanks Dawsey, you confirmed what I suspected looking at the pics on the hotel websites. I am spending a few days diving when I am there so the pool at Jintana might give me somewhere to relax and recover from the diving when I want to avoid the street merchants and BG's.
