New to the board and soon to be new to Phuket!

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 28 and from VA.

I've been reading this board for a while now but just recently created an account. A friend (guy) and I are going to Phuket for the first time March 20-30. Neither of us has ever been to Thailand so I've been trying to study up on everything I need to know.

This site has been a great help and I've enjoyed reading all of your advice and great stories. If any BMs are going to be there at the end of March, it would be great to meet up and see some veterans at work.

In addition to the fine nightlife, I'm also very interested in doing some scuba diving. Anyone know what certification costs there? I've been diving many times with others but never got around to certification, figure it's a good way to spend up the days while I wait for the evenings.

Best to all of you

Thanks for the welcome...

If anyone has a recommendation on where to get certification. When I was in Hawaii this one place said I could fast track it and do it in 5 days (4 hrs a day) but i was flying out in 6 and couldn't dive the day before. Any places in Phuket offering a similar course?

Also, I want to have a cell phone when I'm there. Are there any places to rent phones or do I have to bring a GSM and buy a SIM?

Glad to be aboard!

Hi and welcome.

Open Water course cost around 9-12000 baht I think and last for 3 or 4 days.

I dont think rental is available but you can find cheap ones to buy.

Welcome angelo

May catch up with you when you are over, not sure how much the diving costs but we have a BM on here who took about 3 weeks IIRC, to complete the 5 day course, mongering, partying and diving would not be very easy.

you are sure to have a good time anyway

Welcome to the board Angelo. you'll have to be disciplined if you want to get out diving...if you stay out late it's hard to get up early in the morning have a good trip

Thanks for all the info...

MrDK... I'll add myself to the arriaval forum, thanks. I'll certainly hit up the MTB, hope to see some of you guys up there.

S1MON... Sounds good

9000 doesn't seem too bad for open water. I thought it might be a bit cheaper but I can swing it if I can be disciplined as Iltis said

I figure, if I'm too tired to dive, it's probably because I had more fun than I would diving anyhow

I'll be sure to post a detailed trip review.

Welcome to the board Angelo,

If you see any Tuna while you are out diving can you let me know via the Forum? I'd like to know what one looks like.

Thanks and enjoy Phuket

As an experienced angler I would recommend a N0. 3 magnet for this species.

I managed to find a few green metal pineapple thingies with pins for the next trip.............Just got to remember not to hang on to the pineapple thing and throw the pin in the water............It's gotta work!
