Only western music in the entertainment venues?
As a soon to be 1st timer in Phuket I have checked on this site about the music in the bars/go-go/disco. It seems to me that most have only western music. Is there any places with Thai rock/Morlam/loog thung or with a juke-box?
Cheers,
Giuseppe

Most play western music as it's their preference. There are places that will play Thai music but usually to Thai crowds and are pretty much recognised as places for locals. That doesn't mean that you are not welcome, but I would not recommend it on your first visit. The only one I know of is in Phuket town and was a great night out, but then again, I went with 5 or 6 local ladies who looked after me, and I of course paid the bill.

I'm a little bit disappointed, I would like to see girls dancing Thai style and possibly dance with her. So I have to check for this place downtown....
DIZBUSTER, do you mean the customers prefer western music? Why coming from so far away to have the same music that at home?

Some of the hotels may do traditional Thai dancing shows. Doubt you could dance with them.
Phuket town is the place for Thai music. But even there they will mix in more modern dance stuff or western music. The best IMO is Gor Tor Mor. That guy does it better than the originals.
If you want to see a dancing show to thai music, go to a thai disco in town. A private taxi will find one for you.
In Patong I've heard the odd thai song performed at Rock City. Otherwise goto the strip of karaoke places along the road that goes no where. It is at the south end of patong, where the end of nanai joins with the road to Karon. Lots of thai type places there and not all karaoke.
As a first timer, I think most of the info above maybe hard to use. Basically you kinda have to go looking for it and know where to look. I think most westerners don't like it and/or find it annoying. I know I did when I first came.

The more I read from you DG, the more I think you'd do better in Chiang Mai.

Come to think of it, you're right. He would like it better up there. If there was a beach and ocean then I'd be up there as well.

I think your expectations are way off reality. That's not saying they are wrong, just letting you know that you are in for one big shock when you get over to places like Patong Pattaya etc.
It sounds to me like you need to go somewhere far less commercial and then you will get more what you are looking for.
As for western music, it's not just the tourists who want it, most Thais working in these areas like playing and listening to it as well. IIRC the DJ in Soi Eric is a Thai and therefore he chooses the music, not the customers.

Dizbuster you are right and I don't plan to stay more than 2 or 3 days in Phuket.
ATMwalking mentioned that some hotels have traditionnal dancing shows. Where can I get information and schedule about these shows?

Have a search around on the websites of some of the big name hotel chains, Marriott, Le Meridien, Holiday Inn etc and see if they mention anything. I know the Holiday Inn usualy has one or two daily activities, Thai cooking, ice carving shows etc, but I cannot remember if dancing was on the list or not.

Here's another one...
Phuket music and entertainment news, the Sheraton Grande Laguna Beach, Phuket
The Sheraton Grande Laguna Beach in Phuket has re-created this exciting Asian marketplace dining experience. Instead of a paved sidewalk, the Sheraton Marketplace is tastefully built over a lagoon with a commanding view of the masterfully designed Sheraton complex.
The most fun aspect of Marketplace dining is the ambience and the Sheraton Marketplace is no exception. It offers an exciting, international flair with performances like Thai boxing, sword fights, a magic show, Korean Lion Dance and traditional Thai dancing on different nights of the week.
