Patong Beach

Part of the reason for my trip to Phukt is to totally relax. What is the beach like in April...is it really busy or would i be better off at hotel pool?

Patong may not be the most relaxing beach. There is a lot of activity there and loads of people selling you everything from a carved wooden elephant head to henna tattoos. There are a number of nice quiet beaches not to far away if you wanna just relax. IMO if you’re coming all the way from Scotland you don’t want to spend your days at the pool …..

I have never been to Phuket in April, however, in March Karon Beach is fantastic. One of the things to look out for in low season are the currents in the water and the rain. I doubt the waters are too rough in April, but other may be able to answer that better than me.

Karon Beach is a 300 baht tuk-tuk ride (each way) from Patong. Some rent motor bikes for local travel (see other threads on this topic). Even though the commute is short doing it daily carries a cost.
On the other hand staying in Karon puts you just as far away from the Patong night life. So the call where to stay will be a judgement call on your part. Personally, I like to go out most every night and would stay in Patong.

Patong beach is never totally relaxing. Too many people bothering you with stuff for sale or the sound of jet skis. If you go far to one end or the other it is a little better Karon is still safe in April. By "relax" do you also mean a little secluded?

Just discovered Layan Beach at last Saturday's Hash - never been there before but its an abolute stunner - peaceful and relaxing - worth checking out .

(Not so easy to find - on road north from Surin go past Laguna complex and head towards airport. There are 2 entrances - the second one is the better place to park.)

Schhhhhhhhh That's our secret beach!!!

I found it the other day on one of my Vasco De Gama discovery trips on the bike! I thought I was heading to Tescos. Lovely place and was chatting to Germans there who actually travelled daily from Patong to it! Naithon Beach a bit further up is also worth a look IMHO.

PS There are no shopping trollies and I ran out of milk.

And if you are on line D man, there is no water in the drink wholesalers and I run out of water. Had to buy it by the big bottle instead of the huge plastic bottle thingy I normally buy. One huge plastic thingy about 15 litres for 10 baht, one clear plastic bottle of 4 litres 36 baht, whats going on?????

Although the good thing is now I've got the 4 litre clear plastic one I can secretly brew some more super Rosso (the wine of winners) P.s. dont tell D man he still thinks it is brewed in Italy!!

Does any one know what the beach is called which is at the bottom of a dirt track which leads over to another nice beach. If your on Patong beach looking out to the sea its kinda over to your left. I know that’s not much of a description but those two beaches are pretty nice as well.

not sure why but even why I'm staying at a beach front hotel I always end up at the pool, maybe it's because it's more relaxing, hmm, I'll have to give that some thougt.

First you come to Tri Thrang, just over the hill from Patong.
Nice hotel there, and a small restaurant at the beach just down from the hotel.
I had meals there several times on my last visit (in Christmas), very good food.
Not so nice bottom, corals and rocks, but very nice water and fresh air and a lot of small fish swimming in the water!
In the other end of this beach is also a place serving some food, and drinks, usually only stop there for a drink.
Then further, over the next hill (the dirt road) is Paradise Beach, also very small, not too much people.
But you need more than a small moped to get you up these hills, both ways!
Then further is Freedom Beach, but you need a boat to go there, many can take you from Patong, and also home in the evening.

Check out the beach "Kata noi", this is my favorite beach for relaxing.
Its a small cove, gets deep quick, rocks for snorking up one end.
Never seems to be many people there, no jet ski's, boats etc allowed.
Lots of small places for food and drink......Beautfull spot.
Just get a tuk tuk there, no worries.
Dont get mixed up with "Kata yai"

Happy swimming.

Rex

relaxing in my opinion is subjective!
I relax also on Patong beach. I enjoy the pulsating life there.
Always something to watch!

But if I am looking for silence I agree that Patong is not the place to be.

Still none at the 'water place' and they are complaining like mad.

Mr 'Smiley' in the K&M (Could be 'N') was telling me he can only get small bottles at the moment................Looks like it's going to have to be Som Tigerrrrrrrrr instead!
