Hello all from London UK!
Hi there! I joined this forum over a year ago when a work colleague told me of the delights to be had in this wonderful place. Ever since then I have always wanted to visit LOS.
At that time none of my friends could muster up the money to go so I had no choice but to put it on hold.
I was supposed to go again in January but that fell though too.
I have now decided to go it alone this April for 2wks as I can't rely on other people however I’m slightly worried as I have never been on holiday by myself.. don’t get me wrong I’m perfectly capable of looking after myself but LOS is so far away & they may have different rules there.
My plan is to spend a couple of days in Bangkok then visit one of the islands say Phuket is it easy to do this?
I have a further few questions if I may.
Would there be many loners like myself there?
Is it better to book the hotel in Bangkok before arriving?
I'm not interested in LB at all I've heard some look better than women this worries me.
Yes I have a lot of reading to do now.
Thanks again I look forward to meeting you all.

Your plan is not at all unusual - couple of days in BKK and then move on to somewhere else. Moving around the country is very easy with frequent flights to major tourist destinations, except Pattaya which is only a taxi ride from BKK.
Lots of people travel on their own, myself included and never had any problems - I actually prefer it, not having to worry about what other people want to do.

Welcome to the board Patnut.
If you have never been to LOS before then your in for a treat.........IMO traveling on your own is better, you have no one to babysit and can please yourself. Like the saying goes, "what happens in Thailand stays in Thailand" so there is no one to bring back stories about your exploits.
I think you have it about right, a couple of days in Bangkok and then Phuket. My simple advise to you is go to the MTB bar and introduce yourself, you'll receive a warm welcome from Nicke, Ead and other board members there, alot of whome travel alone
You'll never be lonely in LOS.

Welcome to the board and congrats on your first post!
Your plan seems a good one! A couple of days in BKK then on to somewhere else. I was in your position a few times, that of other people pulling out just before we lest and cancelling the trip completly. In the end, I just decided to go back by myself and it was the best decesion I have ever made. If you have been reading here for a while, then you must have an idea of where else you want to go by now. If you decide to go to Patong, then the MTB is a must visit at least once (after 10pm) especially if you find yourself in need of some like minded company, like Filo has said!

Well apart from other BM's! That is why I always give a false name when I visit!
As for the other q's:
If you only in BKK for a couple of nights, then you might as well book in advance, but if you really want to go around alot of places to find the cheapest price, in a city a big and busy as Bangkok, then its up to you! As fot the LB's, most dont, but the odd one catches people out. If you happen to accidently see one in your room. Chances are no-one will know, so just give him some money to leave and they will. But as I said before, if you ask them, they will tell you if they are a LB!

Welcome Patnut - good intro and looks like you've been a BM a while (since Oct '05).
Read up on TR's (trip reports of other BM's) and pick out what you fancy doing here. Try not to get to many pre-conceived ideas - better first time round to go with the flow, relax and enjoy yourself mate.
Cheers from a fellow (ex)-Londoner.

just out of curiosity when in April will you be arriving in Bangkok because i will be there with a few mates from the 8th April till 11th/12th April, so you could always meet up and we'll show you the ropes, Bangkok is a bit daunting if you never been before, not saying you can't manage cus I'm sure you can, and many people have done, but i don't mind. when you arrive in phuket you'll have no probs just like the other BM's have said

Thanks allot guys you help was much appreciated. It's now my second day here in Bangkok all what you said was true but I think the best way to fully understand how things run out here you must experience it for yourself - Granted I have now realised after speaking to a few people I payed far to much for a couple of taxi rides but I know now and that wont happen to me again.
I shall start the evening with some go-karting then head to Nana Plaza for a few drinks & maybe more ; )
Planning to head off to Pattaya tomorrow to see what thats saying.
