Do you have to pay for this in Australia if you need it?
In Norway it is free, if your doctor agrees that you need it after a check-up.
But if you need one in Thailand, I would expect it to be costly, as it is import goods (heavily taxed, all electronics imports are in Thailand).
But you could go to any hospital and ask, I guess.

I know some older people here in Norway, who are using hearing aids.
Also through my hobby with miniature high-end audio equipment and meeting with an audiologist (the person who helps the user to have the hearing-aid adapted and adjusted) that the new digital types of hearing aids are the absolutely best for the users.
One very big brand making these, are Etymotic Research Inc, in USA.
But as previously said, you need someone to do testing and measurements on the user, and who can adjust the hearing aid to the user's parameters.
This is the job of an audiologist.
So to be able to save some money, maybe make contact with an audiologist at a hospital here in Thailand, and find out what brands/types they endorse, or can help you with.
Then try to get your hearing aid from USA, and brought to you without having to pay import taxes on the device.
The man-hours in the hospitals are cheap here in Thailand, but the equipment is not.
Maybe not the easiest way to get one, but maybe possible to save some money doing it this way (here in Norway, VAT is 25 %, so I have saved some money buying on Ebay, or from shops that will send me audio/electronics in private packages, to avoid the VAT).
Hope this can help you some.

You definitely want to get an audiologist involved in the process, at least for the initial assessment of actual hearing loss and appropriate gain. Excessive gain may cause additional hearing loss, even though it "feels" right to the user.

As for the fitting of the hearing aid, make sure the the professional uses REM (Real Ear Measurement) technology. This technology uses 2 microphones to measure the sound just outside of the ear (being picked up by the microphone) and the sound in the inside of the ear canal (with the aid inserted).

One of the big problems with hearing aids are that they physically changes the resonant frequencies in the ear, which can unintentionally attenuate or excessively amplify certain frequencies.

One of the main benefits of digital hearing aids is that the aid can be adjusted in narrow frequency bands while inserted. Together with REM the fitting process is actually very simple and fully optimized.

Well, I myself am "aurally" challenged!

I've tried a couple of different models of digital hearing aids.

I know there is a "getting used to" period. And you eventually get used to them. But, I couldn't stand to wear them, after 3 or 4 days. I didn't notice any improvement in hearing....But, everything was much louder, too loud sometimes!

They're quite expensive in the USA...the models I tried, were around $6000USD, per pair.

I let it go for now...Many things, I don't want to hear, anyway!55555

But you want to hear when she whispers in your ear ... in which case shouting is not a romantic substitute.
