i think i understand now MrDK

MrDK,
If your original post (board member V poster) was trying to explain the difference between a newbie simply posting, versus someone who has earnt his stripes and offers something more, Denver recent post just helped me to understand where you are coming from.
I have no idea what's in that Rosso stuff or if it is just the result of a chemical reaction between Rosso and Denver's genetic makeup, but whatever it is, it certainly is a health hazard.........for me that is, i'll get up off the floor now and try and compose myself...and clean up the wee!

Change section to "Forum Newbies area"????

RobRoy and Faulty, you made some excellent points. Circles about what it is to be a newbie.

"Newbies" just isn't descriptive enough. It also has a negative feeling about it. Suggest the section get's renamed to "Forum Newbie". So it is clear that it isn't about being new to Phuket, it is about being new to the Forum. You need to learn the ways and spirit of the board (MrDK). This gets to Goong's earning your stripes.

Also suggest the description is reworked as right now it has an "us and them" feeling. Change to something like "Make your new BM intro posts here. Get your feet wet posting. Ask basic questions. Start giving helpful advice. Friendly and flame-free zone."

So be clearer about what "newbies" is about. Give a better idea of what should go on.

Another suggestion, people can only start a new thread in the newbies area until they reach 25 posts. Seems like a lot of the flaming starts when they start one in the other areas about something a bit rude or basic. Of course everyone could still post a reply in all areas. After 25 posts, you could start a topic in any section.

Great suggestion, give 'em a sandbox and and only control them (conflict management) when they start drawing blood. There will always be us and them, otherwise a forum would never take off and despite the peeves, most don't drop out, as witness the member count.
If I'm permitted a criticism, I just wish Denver and co. would stop this Grease replay - sh1t, how did I get so old!

Wind yer neck in Dawsey It was a simple enough question and did not require such a petulant response.

I cannot see why the mention of limericks caused such a reaction that's all. Is there a problem for you with that?

You didn't ask my opinion on this, but here it is anyway... You are a "senior elite" member. Big F'ing Deal. You, in that regard alone, have the ability to change the mood of the thread. Why abuse it? All Dawsey did was put the limericks where they belong rather than in a thread that has a more serious tone. Is there a problem for you for that??

However, if a junior member takes a similar pop at a senior member, well, in a lot of cases, here come "his friends" jumping in to help defend...why? Because chances are said senior member has been on the board for a while and met up with other senior (and junior) members in Thailand and built up a stable of comraderie.................................

Can't fault this, Tanman, or anything else from the other OPs. But some not so new newbies like me have a problem fighting the urge to jump in on the side of the newbies when they're mobbed by the old guard for what we see as no good reason. Because the same names tend to figure prominently in these posts which more sensitive souls read as belittling, especially when it's a stab about their meagre number of posts compared to an impressive 1000 or 2. I don't know if you get PMs from your targets but I do and these new guys are a bit put off to say the least and haven't hit back as I have. They seem to think that they're not allowed an opinion until they've topped 2K or have boozed the night away with you in MTB. I haven't as yet been to MTB in all my trips to LOS but I will drop in next time. I'm sure you're all good guys in person but with some people you don't get a second chance to make a first impression and some of you come across as if you could care less. Sorry, but that's my opinion, which some of you, admittedly only a few, have impressed on me and other newbies. BTW, I like a chuckle too and I get many from this board but I'm also man enough to apologise (as the mods already know) if my notion of humour is misdirected. Anyway, don't mind me, please post on.

I personally don't care how many posts someone has made , I reply to threads based on how a question is asked. If a 'newbies' first post is a one liner like "Where can I screw a BG up the ass ??" , then they are going to get a lot of flak , and not just from those considered 'senior'.

Another point that may be missed is that at times someone will post purely to try and stir up sh!t on the board , those of us who have been on the forum a while recognize these "Trolls" and try to prevent them causing problems. Unfortunately , they have a habit of ingratiating themselves with some of the 'newbies' , who then jump to their aid. This then ends up dividing BM's and can cause a lot of arguments , which is exactly what the Troll intended.

If any BM feels they are being treated unfairly , then they should PM one of the Moderators. Also , the "Newbies Area" is there so that posts can be made and answered without 'flaming' (too much !!! ) , so that new BM's can get used to the workings of the forum and (hopefully) read the stickies and have a bit of information before posting in other sections.

Dont you think you guys are creating the flak from your comment because some of the newbies are misguided by your comments, as I was when I started on this forum. I have now posted 100 something comments and am starting to get used to some of your funny writing and realise that some of you know each other and have spent considerable time together. Guy's I was taking offense to with certain comment I now enjoy their writing. I think we all need time to get used to the various personalities and then the aggresive comments stop. But as RobRoy says let newbies assimilate and ask silly question because we don't know what the board is to start with. It seems initially a place to ask questions about Thailand as silly as they seem to some Bm's as you have been asked them a millions times before. The Newbie does not know that. They are just that Newbies and may have not been to this site before.

That is exactly why there is a "Newbies Area" , so that they can learn about the forum and ask questions. If they do a bit of reading before posting then they usually get a pretty good reception. Also , a lot of the questions which get asked a million times are covered in the stickies , so perhaps they should be pointed in that direction when they first 'sign up'.

Having read avidly all of the above I'm beginning to see the real spirit of the board reflected in this thread and it's infinitely better now that Denver has stopped crooning "Summer Nights". I feel so well disposed today, I might even reshuffle my good guy - bad guy labels and reconsider my personal boycott of MTB.
As db and others have remarked, the questions are usually answered in a civil and patient way for those who want updates or fundamental info and for this I say respect to those who answer, for taking the time. I never had a valid complaint about that; my particular peeve was about when a comment was made by someone who thought it was a valid contribution and was then completely ignored or flamed by the aforesaid wags. I've had some of this and the mods have had the job of reminding me after my equally naff retorts just what is expected of a good board member. I'm just not sure if the instigators, mostly prolific posters, are sent the same message. IMHO, we all have something to tell, from the newest to the oldest and there should be no discrimination.

Is there a Frequently Asked Questions section?

Hope you don't mind me asking.

Yes Diz, it was a simple question that didn't need to be asked, and I'm wondering why it was posed at all

You think my answer was "petulant"? Actually, I think your original question was! Why couldn't you just accept what had been done, and let it slide?

No, thats too easy, time for confrontation with a mod and let him explain himself. Well I won't explain myself to you again. For me the subject is closed.

Wink Post Count......sheep

I think a lot of members think that Post Counts = Member Status.

Hence the 'Look at me I am on 1,000 or 5,000 posts- I am Superman!!'

Posting everyday with nonsence is something Bart Simpson would do if he was alive. There is a lot of shi* posted which has no meaning just to get members posts up; it is very competative; but that is up to you as they sat in LOS (no odds to me I like to read and post when I think it will add something); what ever blows your skirst up.

But that said there are some great BM's on here who are very 'switched on' and have a great sense of humour.

I will let you work out who you are and what category you come into.

The switched on will already know and for the rest...

The SAS have a sign in their Mess Which Reads;

Lead, Follow or get out of the Way!

Nicke should borrow that.

I love the way a post will weave into the twilight zone.

A newbie started to read for reference
but the comments were way too intense
He spent an hour of time, getting his limerick to rhyme
But none of the threads made sense

If it didn't need to be asked, then why would I have bothered putting it up ? I fail to see why a few limericks get bulldozed into another section, when I see the other threads hijecked with all sorts of other things, from ROSSO to guppaquariums to Quoting lyrics from Grease songs etc, but none of those got moved

I cannot see why limericks are so bad compared to this, that's all and I'm not going to search through all the threads of around a year ago to find out either. Obviously the limericks caused a couple of people to post a moan about them and I just wondered why ?

Does that really deserve the petulant responses that I got ? IMO no it doesn't, a simple answer would have sufficed but it seems that you both were incapable of giving simple straight forward answers

So....any chance at all of an answer ? Or are we still going to read something into my post which is just not there ???

Well, seeing as you ask, I was one of 3 or 4 that wrote a limerick. I then read the moans and after that saw that they had been moved. All I asked was "why ?" What did I do that was so bad ??? That's all I wish to know. Why can I not be given the answer to that perfectly straight forward question ??? Perhaps you can tell me ??? If I understand why, then it will stop me from making future posts that will get moved/deleted - won't it !?!?!
