Farang=westerner?
I always thought farang meant foreigner and included all non Thais. But when I spoke to my friend who just got a new job at a restaurant and I asked her if it was Thai or farang restaurant she said “no no Arab restaurant!” Are Africans and Arabs not farangs? Pretty stupid question I guess but still I wonder… =)

Farangs are westerners, not chinese or japanese or arabs, they have other words for them.

The Wikipedia definition is very interesting "farangset" = francais. I always thought it was a sound-a-like "you farang" = "you are foreign" ! Thanks Danny.

I think/hope I got the skinny on this today.... Farang is any non-Thai, that Thai people don't have another name for.. and this could be different for many. The girl I asked is a Thai with bleached blonde hair who speaks English very well. She, even get called a "farang" from time to time according to her in certain situations...

What do you call other Asians? Especially the ones from Korea, Japan, China. You know, the East Asians, not the south Asians like yourself.

And (I always confuse this myself) are latin people farang ??
Italians are farang.. Spanish are farang.. So Cuban, Brazillian, etc etc.. I realize its ethnicity rather than nationality but many ethnically latins are as pale as southern Europeans.
This one is always a bit puzzling.

Other Asians are normally referred to by their nationality.
koreans = kow lee
japanese = yippoon
chinese = jeen
vietnamese = vietnam
burmese = pa mar
etc. etc.
Indians and sometimes Arabs are referred to as "kaek"
p.s. Thais are not South Asians, rather Southeast Asians.

always thought that "falang" was a Thai b@stardisation of the english word foreign...say both words quickly with athai accent....any truth in this????
I know it has taken on a whole new meaning since.....as Thais have honed it down to their own meaning.....but that was my understanding of the root of the word????

One of the possible histories is farang is based on falangset for francais.. The earliest prominent visitors and trading with the kingdom was french..
I also read somewhere that one Frenchman was made very close to the king and court and sold them out to someone (Burmese) and this may have fed into the waryness and mistrust of foreigners..
However I think as you said its do with the Persian word for foreign (ferangi AKA Star trek ??) thats evolved.

i think the farangset explanation is the one that you hear most often, but if you look at the links at the bottom of the Wikipedia page there is a link to a page that points to many similarities in other languages, such as "barang" in Khmer, "farenghi" in Hindi, "afrangi" in Arabic etc. Surely not a coincidence?
the link is The Thai word "Farang", its variations in other languages, and its Arabic origin | The Baheyeldin Dynasty

I met a guy (caucasian ) from South Africa during my trip in December/January. He told me that he had problems with the Thai customs. They saw his passport and asked him where he was from. He answered South Africa. Customs answered: but, but, but Your not chocolate man?..... I love Thailand.

5555 I don't really get that in Thaialand actually but get it loads in Philippines.
"You are from England? Why you black? Are you sure you from there?"
If I'm in a jovial mood I'll say " Actually I'm not sure, now you mention it!"

Probably the reasons are that most blacks that travel to Philippines either comes from Africa or the US. If your familiar with Philippines, basketball is the #1 sports and its imports(non-pinoy players) comes mostly from the US, the majority of which are blacks.
