Guide to Nanai Road action/atmosphere
Hello to all
(Firstly thanks to all those who post great info on this site - there must be many like me who use it as a "bible". Just got up the courage to post a few of my own!!!)
My third visit to Patong coming up May 9-24. Previous ones in March 2005 and Feb 2006. Looking at retirement there in 4 years (at 50) so wanted to try the rainy (or is it hot and rainy?) season to see if it's doable.
Seems that the expats congregate up at bars on Nanai road, presumably near their accommodation. Can any BM give the low-down on the action/atmosphere along and just off Nanai?

sorry - proper intro
Oh... and P.S.
Despite the avatar I'm not "Butterfly Guy" who seems to have a terrible attitude (freebies etc.)!!! I'm a married guy with two almost grown up kids whose very tolerant wife lets him go Thailand once a year (if you know Cap d'Agde you'll know she gets her share here).
I always stay in room 1 at Valhalla with Jan and Jonny and play darts for the team on a Tuesday - and, oh yes, I always stand my round... (should get some replies..)
Never been to MTB but will be there May 10th in the evening!

Loads going on on Nanai- I live at the south end. There's German, Skandie, Great Italian places, Offshore Bar to keep you going food wise, as well as the old market Mae Ubol full of Thai restaurants. Some very good massage and also new fish and chip joint ( conveniently next to one of the better massages or so I've heard. PM me if you have any specific Q and A

also, if you are staying at Valhalla, all those guys are mostly ex-pats and live around Nanai
ask around there
there is not much of a bar girl scene up there, but good fun drinking with the boys
P Bar is a good place

Thanks for the info
Cheers guys
Is there an afternoon destination up there? I live on the beach over here in France so much more interested in the craic (if there's no crack - sorry couldn't resist ) than sun, sea and sand - and no need to speak French. Do the locals have a "rhythm" - e.g. 6pm at P Bar....
I'll get Welsh Jonny to take me up there.....all further info good.
Fish and Chips* AND a soapie - in which order??!!! Have to be careful there!
(*The only thing we miss here in France ..)

Nanai is actually is a pretty good destination to go looking for an afternoon drinking sessions
again, it will just be the boys about having a laugh(i just sounded british there)
only thing, also, is alot of them are ex-pats, so might be a little bit of friends hanging around
but IMO, just a bunch of good, laid back guys hanging around down there
offshore and P bar are 2 of the busiest bars on nanai

Thanks Marc
I usually don't have much trouble starting a conversation and fitting in - I've been an expat one way or another since leaving the UK 21 years ago - mostly Saudi - at least in Thailand the beer's real and the Mekong Coke is cheap.
I've found the expats I met at Valhalla to be extremely open and welcoming - almost miss that ambience as much as the girls (steady now )
Gonna have a whisky and coke now - 7pm in a very wet and windy south of France...

Welsh Jonny and Jan "the man"
Indeed Mav, the "boyo" has taken some/most of the customer relations workload off Jan at Valhalla. Jan took me for my first trip down Bangla in 2005 - unforgettable. Jonny did the same in 2006 - different destinations. They are both great blokes. Hope Jonny's given up the fags though - they were killing him.
Anyway - will make my first trip to MTB on May 10 on arrival then next afternoon up to Nanai - thanks for the info.
All the best

I'm visiting Phuket (Patong) on 10th April for the first time from Riyadh, where were you based ?
Been to thailand a lot, mainly Hua Hin, but going to look at a business there.

Hi Pheasant and hi again Jonny
Hi Pheasant (Plucker)
I was permanent in Jeddah 86 to 89 and 97 to 98, but from 89 to 2003 wrote Jeddah Today then Riyadh Today and Eastern Province Today (six months in the Magic Kingdom per year). Gave up when they started blowing up my clients. Now teaching English in France. No doubt some friends in common over there - Owain at Norwich maybe?? You'll have an absolute blast in Patong, it's great craic and great cr**k. Try out Valhalla pool in the afternoon for cold beers and hot women. Jonny (hop) can fill you in.
Hi Jonny
Looking forward to your tour of Nanai this time (incl the prawn fishing) - got to check out the accommodation for my retirement - wish I was there already! Debbie and I are thinking of a whole sabbatical year around 2012 so she can go back to work if it doesn't work out.
Anyway can't wait....

Sorry we went off thread - are there any bars or restaurants on Nanai that do special evenings once a week (pub quizzes or buffets)?
