Quiet Bars

Hello All

Been to Thailand a fair bit, mainly Hua Hin now, but coming to Phuket for the first time to look at a business pending my 'retirement' to Thailand.

When one wants a rest from the girly bars and sit and read the paper or just people watch, where's the best bar/restaurants to go ?

I'm staying at Patong, Sawatdirak Road from 10th April.

Thanks.

Faulty Towers - BM Crusty and Simbo's bar/resturant in Soi Sunset.

Summer Breeze Hotel Bar - BM Billpays hotel in Soi San Sabai.

On Bangla - P-One, U2, Shipwreck although sometimes not so 'quiet' as have load music in the background.

If it's for reading a newspaper, I go along with K2's first 2 recommendations.

Both Fawlty Towers & Summer Breeze have wi-fi & free internet use for customers too......Both establishments have icy cold beer & great meals too.
(Paddy & Bill....the next one is on you guys ok?) 555555555

For people watching, I would recommend to sit & watch at Rio's or the Margherita Bar...both on opposite corners of Bangla rd & Rat-U-Thit rd.

Enjoy your trip.

In low season it will be quiet in most bars and restaurants, and around Sawatdirak is plenty of that.

Quiet Bars

Thanks Guys, I will check some out.

K2 - I like music and live music bars - I do a bit of 'Old Skool' DJ'ing here in Riyadh myself. By quiet I mean not too much ' hello handsome man, where you come from'

I'm guessing you live on one of the big compounds , B.A.E or similar , used to really enjoy the parties there when I worked in the hospitals .

Worked out there in mid/late 90's and used to visit the compounds a lot , but there were also a few bars around as well , Empire , Tudor Rose , Dog's Bolloxs and the one that my mate and I owned .......
......"The Celtic Corner".

Good things about working there , lots of cash and holidays plus my first (of many !!!!) trips to LOS.

P.S pop into Faulty Towers Bar when you're over , a few ex-Saudi expats ( Gollum for one ) drink in there.

Hello Plucker, welcome to the board, which Hotel are you staying at Sawatdirak road ? Myself I stayed a couple of times in the Thara Patong Hotel.
There are a few quiet bars at the opposite of the thara patong hotel, such as the Country bar and Power bar. In the afternoon this is a fine place to drink something and watch people going to the beach.

Jean-Pierre.

Hi Jean Pierre

Staying at Patong Pearl Resortel. Only booked for 3 nights but will extend if I like it there. I always choose a hotel with a balcony or terrace so I can sit there and chill with my ipod and a drink after/before a night out.

It aint the music that annoys me about that place. As sitting inside watching through the window gets rid of most of it!

Its just over the last few visits I have noticed the attitude of some in there has become very lax and in ways, hostile. Not talking about the normal staff either, as most of them have left for bars new. Well that and the fact that the guy who manages it, is looking more and more like an evil looking gremlin! Just my opnion of course. He probably doesnt live under a bridge and steel sheep or buffalo, or try to hypnotise you with his strange hair-line!

Also the last time over, there computer/server wouldn't allow this website due to refrences of "Child sex"!!?????

It is in Soi Sunset , just before Valhalla and the ExPat hotel, the soi is next to Tai Pan (left hand side when looking fron Bangla).

Here is a good map , click on the drop down menu , select bars and then Faulty Towers (if you zoom out slightly it will give you a better overall view).

Faulty Towers

Thanks for the map, most useful.

It states your location is London, does that mean you won't be in the bar over the next 2 weeks or are you permanently in the bar ?

Owner Larry is mostly in the States. He must be in Patong now with Songkran and Bike week. I've been with him in MTB, maybe he is a member. Tell him about the problems with the server connecting to MTB website. I think there is even a link from Rock Hard website to Phuket-info.
As to managers, all are friendly, except that small guy (US or Canadian) who never says hello. Thai manager in Rio is OK

I live and work in London but usually manage 3 or 4 trips a year to Phuket , next one in June.

The bar is owned by a couple of my mates , both BM's , and there is always one of them "in residence" who will make you welcome and help with any 'local' advice you need.

Never met Larry. I have no problem with the THai manager at all. JUst the last time over, I came to the conclusion that something was up with Rio after a couple of days there. Then I bumpt in to some of the ex-staff members at another place. Seems that a lot of the girls have left in the month or so previous. None would say why. Never went back to Rio after the first week over there.

Just returned from my 2 weeks in Patong and here is my observations for what they are worth although as I went to look at a business my time was limited.

First night, first stop, Margerhitas. Band was very loud but as I was on my own I wasn't trying to talk to anyone. Singha, 140 baht for a small bottle. Why anyone goes there more than once is beyond me. Is it the most expensive bar in Phuket ?

A couple of doors down is a bar where a beer is 50 Baht and you can still watch everyone going down Bangla. Most other bars 60 to 80 Baht, maybe a 100 max.

Faulty Towers : Only managed to get there twice and 1 customer but no BM. Once was about 4 pm Saturday so apparently they was all on the hash but due back. Also went on Sunday to watch footy but they don't have footy on, there was a few in but I went to Soi Sansabai instead as it was near kick off and i wanted to watch the game. Watched on big screen, cant remember the name, Rock something ? Nice aussie owner although I believe he is selling.

Walked past Nicks handlebar a few times but I am not a biker and as it was bike week I didn't bother.

Stumbled accross Add Mansion, just past Christin massage on the opposite side of the road. Very friendly family and nice food although only small menu. Rooms for 650 Baht with balcony also.

Drank in several bars in Bangla and Sawatdirak, all pleasant, some busy, some not so.

Very enjoyable time, thanks for info.
