how to *carry* cash...
Hey all,
excuse the novice question! ...
I (eagerly) read the thing where one can get *man handled* by numerous BGs at once / generally (but nicely) physically hassled etc, and it got me thinking .... so how do you protect the cash? .... is the wallet and c/cards etc etc left in the room-safe and carrying cash the order of the day - if so, where is it? ... waist wallet / crotch-pocket - *where* ?
thanks.
Ratz.
ps: I am not insinuating that all BGs are pocket-dippers, just want to be careful and fore-warned against the few nasties that no doubt lurk out there !

Cards in the hotel safe. Some cash on pocket for obvious reasons..the rest in the ATM machine for future withdraws I would say.
Have a copy of your passport somewhere stored safely, I never needed to use it, but it makes sense in a way.

is literally - pocket - no problem with this / no need for one of those "waist wallet" things to carry the cash-money ?

Unless you're paranoid, nope.
btw, you can buy them (or a belt with "secret storage") on walking street for 200 baht...the news is spread already :-)

slowly ratz ;-) don't spoil being a handsum man....
I would say, with one of those waist wallet things around you:
1> Look incredibly stupid - yep, to make it complete just hang a photo camera around your neck at the same time.
2> You make a perfect aim of interest ... what the heck does that guy have hanging around his waiste, let's take a look and don't ask too many questions while checking it out
Keep the cash you need in your pocket, the rest safely in the ATM machine.
You pay some costs to withdraw every now and then, but you don't have the worries about losing it.

Combat wallet in the front pants pocket with the max amount of cash I might spend, home driver's license (as ID), health insurance card and American Express card (best bet if I make an unplanned visit to the hospital). Are there problems with that plan--probably--but makes as much sense as any of the alternatives I can think of.

Normaly I have a reduced size photocopy of my Passport laminated with one credit card or ATM depending on what my plans are, and my large bills (only enought for the day/night) held together with an elastic band in my right hand front pocket and all my small bills and change in my left. The rest is secured in my hotel room
Oh bugger! now all the pick pockets reading this will know where to look when I'm stumbling down the soi's.....

I give all my money to TG on first night of holiday, then I don't have to carry any cash around, and if I run low on funds to buy gold, etc. then it's her fault.

I have an under-shirt "waist wallet" only it goes under the arm like a gunstrap, it's made of thin, soft & stretchy material like they use for lingerie and is damned hard to spot you are wearing it. I've never once used it in thailand however or ever felt the need to.
A little trick I was once taught is wrap a rubber band around your wallet - it sounds like bollocks but if you do this and try pick pocketing yourself you will see it adds resistance and sometimes snags, often enough to disrupt the flow of a smooth withdrawl of it. It won't stop it just being yanked out but it can put someone off or maybe alert you...not 100% effective but costs nothing.

I have a second thin wallet that I take out when going to town, with driving licence and money for the night, usually take 4k unless i know is Lil is going to be out then I take less.
My reckoning is, if I lose it no probs only small amount of money. In all the time of coming here never had it stolen. Duncs had his wallet pinched by a LB in Tiger toliets but got the wallet back later.
It can happen anywhere but I feel it seems less often here than say, London, so just take out what you need and no worries.

i would wander down to shipwreck for "breakfast" and hit cash point. i would go back to summer breeze and leave wallet in safe with cards and just take out enough cash for the night i can afford to spend/lose.
worked for me!

I just take what i need for the night and leave the rest locked up in my bag. I have sent BG's out to get me things and fell asleep and when i wake up my change is stacked up in a neat little pile on my bedside table. I have never been ripped off in the 6 years i have been going to LOS. Exept being over charged for drinks at a bar i think most Thai's are pretty trust worthy. Yes they will try to get as much out of you as they can but i have never had anything stolen.

I think it's because if they rip you off you will get angry and leave. And if you leave no more baht for them.

I kept all my cash in my hotel safe and suitcase..... Took what i wanted out and left the rest there. No hassle at all. Card i left in my hotel safe unless i needed money from ATM. i wouldn't worry unduly. If i was on a "Mission" that night I would put aside the girls money before i went out and left it at the hotel. Just carried booze and BF money on me.

I always left my valuables and cards as well as most of the cash in the safe and only took out the money I though I would need for the night plus a little extra for "emergencies". Worked perfect for me. Last few days, I gave some cash to my TG, so she could buy some snacks, water or fruit when we felt like it. She always used it sensibly.

Different pockets
Cards - only with me from hotel to machine and back to safe.
Cash - only amount with me that I can "afford" to drink, spend on LD BF and food = 3 K ?
Where - Thousands in back trouser pocket loose - buttoned.
Change (< 1000 bht notes) in shirt breast pocket - I always wear Thai silk shirt not T-shirts or polos. You'd know if someone got their hand in there - you'd see the money come out.
Plastified copy ID in back right pocket - unbuttoned (don't care if they nick that).
Wallet - WTF for ?

Sorry, didnt read all yer replies..
Have backpacked a lot of the world...wherein your money is a lot more vunerable...
I always do this...
NEVER take my wallet out 'on the town', just ample cash, or less if you wanna make yourself have a quiet nite.
One credit card and passport and vast majority of cash to hotel safe (pref with current balance slip next to it, that you recorded ,of course, and keep record in your diary/other spot in room), other c.card concealed in your room/bag along with photocopy of your passport. Surplus small cash , wallet in room or , if available , room safe, for emergencies.
Now whatever happens you have ( except for the p/port), a $ survival kit.
NOT to make you put your guard down BUT I have found Thailand to be very safe for this kind of thing and have never had a problem.
Friends biggest probs, usually pissed , is to leave their wallets somewhere or their ATM card in the machine (!!??) and then they ruin the next few days with angst!
Whaddya need a wallet for? I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYWHERE IN LOS THAT REFUSES CASH OR ASKS FOR YOUR ID!!! Lose $100 cash from your pocket and thats all you lost!
I have only ever heard of L/Bs near Nana doing a pick pocket job and have even had friends have their lost wallets returned to them...I feel safer there than many parts of Sydney, Australia...

PS...a bloke I met finds a good lady Day 1 or 2 and gives her 3000 baht (including her 'fees') a day thereafter. Reckons he goes to the beach for the day, she sees he eats very well all day (fruit, healthy drinks and Thai style food and I can attest to the ample , great value food they can get!) and they go out every night .Just as he is about to be totally smashed (beer and shots) around 1 or 2am,she makes him go home and sleep with her and he says this is the way to go...Everything he has stays in the Yorkshire Inn( Soi Sansabai) safe until the next day..He has never had any la | |
