Hello From New York!
Finally, I am making my introduction to the board. I travelled to Thailand in November of 2006 with work. When the 2 week job finished in Chiang Mai, I made my way down to Phuket for a "short" vacation. I started in Cape Panwa and moved to Patong after one week.
Like so many others, I just fell in love with Thailand. Each week I found myself on the phone with the airline extending for 1 more week. Finally, I just broke down and chose the last possible departure date that I could get away with. All in all, I had a holiday that lasted almost 6 weeks through Christmas and New Years.
I have been an avid reader of this site and probably have learned more here than from any other resource. It amazes me how many people are online in the forums at any given time.
Thailand has become a bit of an obsession to me. I find it endlessly fascinating-like an onion with infinite layers. I love the fact that as soon as I think that I understand something, I don't. I love the relaxed atmosphere. I even love not being in control and being forced to just let go because there is not a d*** thing that I can do. In many ways this is a welcome break from the pressures that I sometimes experience in the US. I love the scenery and the weather.
When I returned home to New York in January, I went through the "blues" that many others have described. I started spending insane amounts of time online and I began reading everything Thai that I could find. Eventually I had to go back to work and some of this subsided.
Then on a whim, I decided to call the airline to see how many miles I needed to get to BKK. It turned out that I was in pretty good shape and was able to return to Phuket for 3 weeks in May.
So after 2 trips in less than a year, I feel like I have found a place that I really like and want to continue exploring. I don't plan on packing it in and moving to Asia yet, but I do dream about it sometimes.
Many thanks to all of you for teaching me so much!
