Hi Chloe,
Nicke might have some information for you as he used to go down there for his Visa renewals.

Chloe, why do so many Malaysians go to Had Yai. Is it because it is within a reasonable driving distance? Just seems there are much better places to go.

Chloe, what do you want to doe in Hat Yai? I think it is a stop for expats going to Malaysia for a visa renewal. And for Malaysian men it is a mongering place to do things that are not so easily available (or cheap) in Malaysia. So what would a girl do there? Better chose Phuket or another place.

I think i can answer this for her...my parents used to go to Hatyai every weekend when we were staying in Penang....and they drive there...for cheap good food, especially seafood and SHOPPING...cheap quality (and also imitation) goods...especially clothings for the family...single males for mongering..morever most of the people there speak Hokkien (major chinese dialect in North Peninsula Malaysia) and communication was quite easy...BTW the girls who work there are of the fairer type. For Beaches...there are too many in Malaysia which are better and so it is not taken into consideration and Phuket is considered as too expensive and too far or not easily accessible by road...nowadays of course with Airasia and now Firefly and with the bombings in Hatyai, Phuket is attracting more Malaysians.

Thanks Coyotee,
You mean you can shop for food and then actually cook it yourself???
Anyhow, I learned something new as I had no idea that this was a big reason for Malaysians, especially those living close to the border, to visit Had Yaai.

Chloe, welcome to the board.
I have been to Hatyai and I went there by bus, from Msia , about 4 years ago.
So, the answer of one of your questions is: YES, you can travel to Hatyai by bus from KL. I think it took me about 6 hours in total, to go there from KL at that time. There are quite a few bus services in KL which you can enquire. Unfortunately, I am neither a Malay nor living in KL I cannot help you with more details.

And yes.. as sm BMs have said, I agree, Hat yai to me felt like Malaysian part of Thailand for the Hokkien they were speaking in.
There were quite a few pretty women there (fair skin rules, hehehe), and the food was just awesome. Things were very cheap, compared to them in Malaysia, and it was just a stone away from.. mmm.. what is the Malaysian state nearest to it????
