Any public wireless or internet cafes in Phuket?
I'm a newbie coming to Phuket for about a month in October. I still need to keeep intouch once in a while. Any internet cafes or public wireless in Phuket or Patong? I will be staying at the baanlaimai, do you know if they have internet access?
Also going to do some fishing and scuba - but I can read he threads for details unless someone has a great suggestion.
I've been daydreaming and watching the MTB web cam waiting for my turn and can't wait. 41 days and counting.

This is also important factor for me!!! I need Wifi at least a few times a day to check up on work. Faulty Towers offers free WIFI.... Also if you can't be arsed to take laptop you can use their computer also!
Many hotels now also offer WIFI... 2 things I need when booking hotel. In Room Safe, WIFI and of course GF... Hang on thats 3......
If you email hotel 1st they will tell you if Free WIFI or they charge! Last thing you want is to have to walk 20 minutes to find WIFI!

Do I want to haul my computer into the MTB? I usually have trouble hauling my ass out of the MTB.
I've seen a list somewhere of the hotspots in Patong. More all the time. Summerbreeze lobby works.

The rookie singles. Sprains his arm patting himself on the back. I don't like to go there with the newbies.

This link is old, but has a list with Wi Fi hotspots. It is however not up to date, but does give you a few ideas of where to try.
We could do with an up to date complete list?
One thing Snideybowl, if you do use an Internet cafe, do not do any personal banking/financial transactions there. Keyloggers are known to be in some cafes.

Thats something ive been meaning to ask, my bank, as part of its online security requires you enter several parts of the password via a scrolling alphabet list using the mouse (no keys pressed and random letters needed)
enter letter 1
enter letter 5
etc
Is that reasonably safe in internet cafes?

I don't think that was the idea. Just pointing out Wi Fi is there if you want to use it.

Public MTB Wifi
Nickes Wifi is excellent. I can use my phone to check my email on his WiFi and also make VOIP calls to England. Admittently no-one can understand me when I speak (usually drunk) but that is a hazard of the MTB.

Yes, but keep utilisation down to a minimum, i.e. only really log in if you really have to.
For passwords etc try to avoid using known words or sequences though, e.g. if you are asked to type in letter 2, letter 3 and letter 4 giving the letters "u", "c" and "k", the chances are that a person using a keystroke logger will be able to guess your word and then gain access.
In order to get round this, use long passwords and even consider adding words together, e.g. "I" "like" LOS" becomes "ilikelos" and therefore virtually impossible for a bandito to guess your word. They will skip trying to break yours and move on to another.
