Hi all, before you tell me to try the search, i have. Now is it true you cant get Thai money in the UK and the only way to get Thai money is when you get there(just seems a bit odd to me ). Now only 24 days to go!!!!!!!!!!!

you don't need getting any thai baht in the uk, get it in bkk airport when you get there. higher exchange rates.
ps. baht. no bhaht. thats why your search didn't come up with anything

You can order most currency through LLoydsTSB-either at the branch or on-line. Can be with you within 24hrs.

Just change a few pounds on arrival at BKK or use an ATM machine on arrival. Don't bother changing any money before hand.

Wait till you get to Bangkok to change any money , plenty of "exchange booths" around. You would get a really bad exchange rate in the U.K , here are the rates from this time last year , as an example.
Quote:
Exchange Rate in UK airport - £1 = 63.92 Baht
Exchange Rate in Bangkok Airport - £1 = 69.99 Baht

Far better rates over there, but beware of withdrawl charges at ATMs if withdrawing daily! Better to take out a large amount and keep it in the safe.

if i can come in here please...so we have established that we are going to save what?...6p/7p for every pound using the thai airport-not exactly a massive saving is it/ £30 for a £500 exchange.
ok its a saving but for a newbie, i would feel more comfortable knowing that you had already got some cash in the uk, than the worry about rushing about in a foreign airport- when you are stressed enough about finding a connecting flight.
so how about stirling travellers cheques- do most hotels have the 'bureau de change' or is it a trip to the bank- and i guess they would take a commision themsleves aswell. i am considering taking some trav cheues and some cash so you havnt got 'all your eggs in the same basket'
is it a good idea or not?

Maybe that £30 per £500 doesn't sound much, but an average spend of £1k over 2 -3 weeks means saving around £60. Now £60 is a decent night out in LOS, just for the sake of taking cash, and using a moneychanger.
Travellers cheque's? Up 2 You, but every time you have to change one, you have to take out your passport, and I would surely lose mine after getting mao in the bar. I'd far rather take the cash, leave it in the safe, and change a reasonable amount into baht as needed. I just take a C/C for backup.
If you feel more comfortable having some baht before you arrive, just get £20 worth from your bank, to cover taxi/drink etc.

You can get baht at virtually any travel agent on the High St that does currency. Travelex at most airports give rubbish rates but you can order on line and get their better internet rates and collect at your airport. Don't forget to tell your bank you are travelling though. I had all my cards stopped last year. They seem to think Thailand financially a risk. Can't understand why. I've always found Thais wonderfully honest.

not much difference anywhere in thailand from the airports in either bkk or hkt.
look at the rates on the thai bank websites eg bangkok bank and then compare it to the crappy rates the money exchangers give at the western airports.
after you get your bags at hkt, there is a money exchange booth and atms to get some thai baht.
just checking the money exchangers booth on your way about patong, you will see the rates will differ from booth to booth, and really if your staying for a month or so it can add up to a fairly good saving, the bank branches if you can be bothered usually offer better rates than the booths.
personally, i just use my farang atm card or i telegraphic transfer to my thai bank account before i leave.

5555 Do a search.
I had my visa card copied 3 times in one year. While staying home my card was visiting Shanghai, US and Canada, and Australia. Also friends and other BM's got the same experience.
And a few months ago a manipulated ATM was found on Bangla.

On all but my last trip I took some Thai Baht money with me. usually 50 -100 gbp. well apart from when i went from germany in May then it was all the euro coins and 5 euro notes I wasn't sure they'd change over there.
If you feel better, take a small amount with you. It shouldn't be a problem, but check with your bank to see if your card works abroad. The chances are it does, but if it makes you feel better, go in and ask them. Also, if it makes you feel better take some gbp with you as back-up money and keep it in your wallet.
This is what I generally do myself.

When my Visa Card was frozen last year I had to contact the Visa Fraud desk. They told me that in their experience Thailand is in their high incident category.Bank of Scotland also state the same.
Some banks can issue you a Travel card for holidays. You just top it up before coming out here. The ATMs here all accept Cirrus and other main stream cards and with Bank of Scotland I do not pay any surcharges.

Look around when you get to Phuket though. As when I used to change currency/ TC in exchange booths, the conversion rates can change by more than a few baht between differnet booths. Especially consider the beach road/Bangla price hike which is put on everything sold in that area, including currency.

that was the reason why i never used a ATM on Bangla this time...
went either to Jungceylon or used an ATM outside of a 7/11
never paid a fee for withdrawal
