i'm 20 y.o Australian and will be going to phuket for the first time early december for 2 weeks staying at le meridien first of all just having a browse around this site has been really helpful and have found out most of the stuff i was interested in knowing. so thanks to all the board members for posting valuable information. i can also see juust from browsing there are some great characters on the board. its far from boring! i have a few questions which i have tried to search for answers and havent been able to find anything. firstly i'm pretty big on surfing and was wondering whether there will be much reasonable surf around phuket at this time (anywhere within reasonable taxi distance), and whether it will be worth bringing a board over from Aus. i read kata beach has some surf, but its probably more suited to mini-mals? but most of the surfing talk seems to focus on othertimes of the year i think. secondly, staying at le meridien, i plan to go out into patong at night to the bars/clubs etc and wondering whether its safe (as i'll probably be heading in by myself) to get taxi back at 3am+ back to le meridien? got a budget of about 8k bht a day so looking at getting some surfing, nice food, massage and several beers + club entry a night including taxi'ss and don't really want to be living on a real tight budget watching every cent, from what i've read this should be alright? also finally will there be australian cricket on in the bars in december? cant wait to get to phuket appreciate any replies thanks

Hi and Welcome Hawthorn22, the le meridien is a nice place, not GF though. The Tuk Tuk will charge you about 300 thb per trip into Patong. You might find catching the scheduled daily shuttle from the Hotel into Patong will help in saving money. The le meridien also has a small private beach, but never seen any decent waves to surf, so maybe the locals will know what are the better places for that.
Make it a point to see the Bm's at MTB, and I'm sure they will answer any questions when you land. Have a good trip and enjoy...

Welcome to the board mate - you shouldnt have any problems finding a tuktuk to get you back to the meridien.
as said, just show up at mai thai bar and introduce yourself. the other bm's there will be able to point out the best places to go

Welcome to the board mate ...
I'd seriously reconsider staying at Le Maridian .. top hotel and it will certainly be safe. It is VERY un girl friendly, this is where royal family and ho-so Thai;s stay after all ... so reckon worth you checking the hotel section and getting somewhere a) cheaper and b) girl friendly. Anyways - have a great trip!

Welcome to another Aussie on the board, I agree with the other BM's regarding the Le Meridien. Staying out there is like getting a ticket to Melbourne to go to the Grandfinal and standing outside to watch the game! Lots of very nice hotels in and around Patong. Even if your not planning to bring a beautiful TG back to your room, you will be in staggering distance of everything. You should be able to watch the cricket at the Black Sheep bar. Turn left at the non beach end of Banglas Road and about 100 metres down on the left hand side. Run buy an aussie from Queensland

thanks so far guys for the info.
look forward to having a few cold beers whilst watching the cricket. i won't be able to change my hotel reservation unfortunately because i'm going with my parents and sisters, and my parnets have already paid for the package.

In regard to your question about safety, Patong is pretty safe at night. For getting back and forth from Meridien, pay a tuk tuk driver 300 Baht per trip, and he will make sure you get there with no problems!! When you see all the lovely girls in Patong, I find it hard to imagine that a fit guy your age would not be dying to have a taste, especially as when the girls see you, they will be all over you. A lot of the girls go for younsters like yourself in a big way!! They know where the ST(short time) rooms are, so you won't have any problem finding a place to take them for a little dalliance. Your budget is more than adequate for tuk tuks and ST rooms. You could, of course, go to Christin's for a relaxing/exciting hour of sex, but I think you would really enjoy it more if you went to Soi Eric, picked out a girl, and had her escort you for the evening. It would add a whole new dimension to drinking beer while watching cricket!! Then you could go clubbing and to a room after the match! One other bit of advice: Don't pay more than 1000 Baht for the girl. If she wants more than that, she is playing you, as a young guy shouldn't have to pay more. Most girls would be very happy to go with you for 1000.
