They take you were ever you want (and dont want)
Better take a limousine driver - it is more comfortable if is a longer trip.

Tuk tuks, can be usefull (and always expensive) for short distances, but for longer trips not the best choice.
You could always rent a scooter : don't cost that much and you have total freedom. Just remeber that traffic in Phuket can be crazy, and forget this option if you never rode a bike or scooter before.

the reason i ask is i'm trying to work out the best way to get from Langkawi to phuket, i can't decide if i want to catch a plane and spend more time in an airport and in the sky, or catch a ferry from langkawi to satun then bus, taxi, limo what ever it may be from there to phuket, so i get to see some of the country side that way. There will be 4 of us, we're not looking for the cheapest way to get there but dont want to spend an ENTIRE day travelling at the same time.. any suggestions most welcome cheers

I would get a ferry to Penang and try and get a flight with Firefly.
They fly direct to Phuket from there every day for about 1600 to 2000 baht one way.The flight takes just over an hour.
