Hi Guys,

I have to do a little work for my company when I am in Thailand. Has anyone bought or used a wireless card for their computer while in LOS? I only need it for when I am in Thailand this year and don't want to sign up for a 2 yr contract here in the states. Any advise? Can you buy a pas as you go card for your laptop in Thailand? $$$???

I assume your laptop doesn't have a wireless card at present? That is what I can conclude from your post.
If so, and you are in the US or the UK now, I would get one there, and set it up at home before you leave.

If I have the wrong end of the stick, and you have a wireless enabled laptop, then there are quite a few places you can connect to a wifi spot. Lots of hotels have them, and it maybe just a case of paying a small amount for the encryption code to get connected. Will you be in Phuket? , as there are many places you can connect there.

Hi Dawsay,

My laptop is wireless enabled. I will be in some areas that do not have any Wireless i.e. esaan, Ubon, etc. I know you can get a phone card that will allow you to dial from the computer like a cell phone and hook up to the internet also. I have never needed to since wireless is usually available. Let me know if you have any thoughts. Thanks!

One2call has something called Edge. Think its around 1000b/month and you can be connected how much you want. Think it gives around 0.3Mbit/sec.

Dtac has something also. Just call their call-centre and ask for their gprs. They will send back a confirmation within a couple of minutes. Call them again and ask for their pre-paid, unlimited gprs-service. Around 260b for 7 days...

Best is to go in to a shop when you arrive and check..

In issan you will likely to be stuck with GRPS.. Probably can be done through your cellphone.. Painfully slow and not very reliable. EDGE is available in urban / populated areas (Dont know about urban issan ?) and is a bit faster.

In some areas you can access CATs CDMA 2000 network, thats a lot faster but requires purchase of equipment (10k - 12k baht) and they can be awkward about needing a work permit or Thai ID for the contract.

Just saying 'wireless card' doesnt help us much as wireless comes in many many flavors and the normal 802.11 style wireless is not going to be around in rural issan.
