Plan B
Hi All
Having resently retired and living in a beautiful country but one with unfortunately a very uncertain political future, I spent the last couple of months researching for an alternative home - a Plan B. Found LOS. Reading most of the posts on this forum sure make it sound like paradise! Thanx for all the tips and info. However being sceptical by nature. I am coming over to check for myself. I will be in Thailand from 19 Dec to 18 January and plan to go to Bangkok, Pattya, Patong, Krabi, Ko Lanta and Ko Samui. Will be in Patong between 28 Dec and 04 Jan. Hope to meet some BM at the MTB.

Interesting time to be in Thailand. You will get to see the Thai political process at work, could give you an insight into how things happen here. Good or bad, you decide.

My Land of Crime is South Africa. Have a great lifestyle here (except for the crime) but are fearing that things will deteriorate like in Zimbabwe our northern neighbour. It only takes one mad politician to turn paradise into hell.

A few years ago I had a colleague from South Africa visiting our company in the US. He offered endless stories about crime and defeating it.
One trick was to install flame throwers along the side of the car to deter carjackers.

Elohes.
Welcome to the board. But go easy there mate. We have our problem here in SA but all in all it is still a great place to live. LOS is good you will enjoy yourself, but from my understanding it is not a simple matter to just go live there. Visit the place, talk to the BM's but above all do lots of research.. Use the search engine on this site as it is a good place to start and you will soon pick up the positives as well as the pitfalls..

Not sure if Thailand's political future is anymore certain than SA's-they're under military rule at the moment after a coup about a year ago!!
Anyway have a good trip and avoid going from the frying pan into the fire...

That's the way I read it Elohes.
I spent 6 months in Phuket a few years ago,but got nervous when I looked at business prospects.I also missed SA alot.Things like different language,written and oral,and dealing with a totally different culture (Asian) from what we are used too,can all be a steep learning curve when you are there for an extended time. But don't get me wrong,I'm not saying I wouldn't want to retire there (as you seem to be interested in) but I would probably split the year up between the two countries and would have to be financially comfortable..........so it was not viable for me at my current stage in life.

My reading of the situation too.
I will be visiting LOS again in March and have the thought of spending more time there once I retire. But would keep an SA base and spending my time between the two if that is at all possible. But all of that is a while off still.
