Time for Info Countdown

Hello fellow BM's

Time is drawing close for me and must say that I fear I cannot prepare enough for my first trip to LOS.

I have been on here many times and made the odd regular post or reply but as time draws near I need to start gearing up. I have my money stuff done. I have my luggage worked out.

One of my major concerns is that being a pisshead, I worry about getting home safely.

2. Given that I am there in late March to early april - What is the accepted dress code at night.

3. I hear about the BM's parties/BBQ's and hope this occurs during my time.

4. Given I have a birthday the day I fly out, I need a venue to have a birthday bash.

5. Maybe more to come.

Hunter Valley.

OK mate...you gettin' excited???

1. Ive never felt threatened or in danger, ever in LOS but you still follow normal 'protective' behaviour. ie leave while you can still walk, dont get involved in arguments or disagreements you pass etc. I never carry a wallet, just cash enough that i can afford to lose. You acn safely smile at anyone and you'll never get anyone (well a local anyway ) say ," Whad are you lookin at???".
DONT allow yourself to be accosted by a buch of ladyboys ( Katoeys) is good advise too..
2. Same clothes all year round. My suggestion is neat Aus casual, neat shirt and shorts ( April a bit hot for jeans), leather neat shoes (socks not neccessary)
3. Keep checking here or with Nicke or the BMs at MTB re BBQ's or with Trent ( Aus) at Dingoes or Geir at Hells Bells
4.You could PM any of the blokes above re what they'll cater for you for the birthday and invite the BMs on here and it'd be a great way to break the ice..(Dont worry, you wont get hundreds, usually a dozen at the most at any given time in Patong, outside peak times)
5. Ask on, its the best way to be prepared and ,as I will be there we'll have a beer for sure.

i go out with a normal t-shirt or shirt and shorts. whatever you feel you're comfortable in.....just make sure you're not topless555

3. I hear about the BM's parties/BBQ's and hope this occurs during my time.

you can always organise your own bbq, just ask one of the BM barowners

4. Given I have a birthday the day I fly out, I need a venue to have a birthday bash.
see number 3

cheers

Mark26,

What are you saying about me? Just because I am really good guy and very important to the world and everyone around me doesn't mean i'm 'narcissitic'.

Good advice Mai Chob, I usually dress a little better at night, still cool and comfortable, but not beach wear. I notice the BG's like a better dressed cleaner looking falang. I always scatter money into each pocket so if get riped, always have a reserve. Never take the wallet. All in all, be your self, smile a lot, be polite and you will have the time of your life. I will be there early to mid April, so if your still around, fellow piss heads unite! 555555555

general awareness is all you need to keep safe at night, i reckon a motorcycle taxi at night to get home is the go. take the above advice, spread money around and don't take to much just enough for the night, happy b'day, i will be there in april so we might have a coldie to celebrate.

Thank you all for your advice. I have learnt very much from this forum. It has been invaluable, it is as if I have already been there. And guess what? I know it will be completely different than what I expect.

Good tip there, especialy regarding being polite.
It never hurts to treat the girls with a bit of respect, they will warm to you so much quicker...

Some more tips Hunter.

1, Try to book a hotel room which contains a personal room safe and don't let anyone see you entering the PIN number.

If you have overnight guests or want to avoid pilfering from cleaning staff, the safe is great for your passport, cash, credit cards, camera and other valuables. You don't want to wake up to find you've been cleaned out by your guest, nor get shaken down while in the shower or on the can.

2. Prepare a list of emergency telephone numbers:

Visa Emergency
Mastercard Emergency
Your Bank
Mobile Help Desk

I like to add these to my cell phone contact list as well as in a "draft" e-mail which I can access online if I lose my phone.

3. Tell your credit card providers and bank of your travel plans.
They can disable your accounts without notice if they believe your overseas transactions are unauthorized, leaving you stranded (have two ATM accounts should the worst happen.

4. Get good travel insurance.
Flight Centre offer a good policy which also includes injury from motorcycle accident as long as the bike is under 200cc and you or the driver are licensed to drive. Also covers your excess if you rent a car.

5. Check with your mobile phone provider regarding your rates and get them to enable overseas roaming. I found receiving and making voice calls and receiving messagebank messages via Telstra is murder, so I enabled SMS roaming only. I can receive SMS for free and make SMS for 56cents each.

6. Get yourself some duty free liquor from the airport.
You can import 1 litre duty free into Thailand. I also bought a 300ml bottle of Johnny Walker Black which was on a super special and no one questioned me at customs.

7. Take ample supply of Australian quality condoms with you (heaps).
I don't think LOS condoms are as good and they seem to be made for guys with small dicks. While you're at it get a large tube of KY lube.

8. You'll need a power point adapter to be able to plug your mobile charger, electric shaver etc. Cheapest to get adaptor at a general store in LOS.

9. Buy some Imodium from the chemist and carry it with you in case you get the shits. There's a high chance you'll get a stomach bug. This is catastrophic if you get it when flying or in an intercity coach.

10. List all your emergency numbers and details (passport replacement, embassy, family contacts, airline ticket details, insurance contact, hotel details) in a "draft" of an e-mail. Easy to access. Just go online at an internet cafe.

11. Cash is best in LOS. Bring as much as you're prepared to lose and use it to supplement your ATM card. (Room safe gives some peace of mind). There are plenty of currency exchange booths around the place. Only change the bare minimum at airports, especially Australian ones. Usually there is no commission fee and the rates are displayed. Ask them for plenty of change. If you leave with a wad full of 500B & 1,000B notes, everyone will say "I no hab change". You'll end up paying more than you wanted to. Get plenty of 50B & 100B notes. If you get stranded, buy small items at a 7/11 store and tender 1,000B notes.

12. Only drink bottled water (as well as booze). Drink tap water at your peril.
You said you're a pisshead. After a heavy night you'll need to rehydrate. I found the large 4 litre bottle water containers from supermarkets were great value and you can flush those kidneys.

13. Register your trip with Department of Foreign Affairs.
Helps them to identify your body if you come to grief or get kdnapped.

https://www.orao.dfat.gov.au/orao/we...epage?Openpage

14. See your doctor about getting apropriate vaccinations (malaria etc).

15. Use Phuket-Info.com and "search engines" to make a list of suitable back up hotels you can move to, in case you have a serious issue with the place you book.

Lastly, network with the boys (and ladies) for great tips and support.

CM

Um yes, and what Critical Mass said...this could be a "Sticky". tho I never got #09 a bad gut , and i did, in Indo ,all the time...
Dont get paranoid but . LOS is quite safe..
The girls you meet may charge...but they will charge less for longer if you are well presented , polite and happy ( "Sanuk")...

Hunter... Just take it as it comes. You will really enjoy yourself but pace yourself. Once you get past the first night you will work things out. It's not like aust... people are happy, no rules, it's party time all the time.. but be warned , it's addictive, you will want to come back. The departure lounge at Phuket Airport is a very very sad place.

I already have pair that I have been wearing for the last twelve months. They broke last weekend, so i think I will try and see without them for a while. Thanks for the advice Mav.

I plan to make a plan so that my plan will fail, just like many others BM's. Thought it was part of the LOS experience.

plenty of good advice posted here HV, and a lot that has never crossed my mind..good idea not to organize any boat trips or days out and about, till you have been there a few nights hit the bars got all the prices , and then see how you shape up in the mornings .Remembering that a lot of these day trips hit the road pretty early in the morning..I still have terrible dreams of going fishing picked up at 6.30 in the morning after leaving the bar at 4.00 am super mao..

Thanks Floppy.

I agree there is a lot of experience here. I get the feeling I will be hitting it hard early and then looking for some quiet. Maybe a day or two away to recharge.

Anyway it drwas close and the excitement continues to build.
