Q. Travel Insurance for 12 months in Phuket
Hi all,
My son is 26 and planning to travel (from Australia) to Phuket for 12 months. A friend has offered him work in Phuket.
He's busy getting ready for the move and I've offered to ask the gurus on the board about insurance.
Can anyone recommend an insurance company that will give him the complete cover he's likely to need while he's there? Vehicle hire, public liability, medical, repatriation, etc.
Thanks for your help. This is a greatforum but It's taken me over 4 months to search through it and I don't think I've scratched the surface.
All the best

I personally have never seen travel insurance that covered you for more than 90 days...
Tho if he is doing visa runs then I know people who have used multi trip annual cover as they always have to leave the country every 90 days.

You can gett all insurance which you need.
You have only to ask the insurance company, they will make you an offer.
Sure you have to pay a little bit more - but you get it.

Hi 1putt.
As with anything, getting several quotes is the way to go.
Try e-mailing Ben Ross at Flight Centre.
His company writes thousands of policies for Covermore.
E-mail address is:
ben.ross@flightcentre.co..au
He's come through with great policies for me.
They also include injury when driving a scooter under 200cc, as well as excess fees levied by motor vehicle rental companies if you have an accident

I extended my 45 day travel insurance once by 3 months. That cost me 30K THB.. 12 months of local insurance is cheaper. Some Thai companies are demanding work permits now, but that should not be a problem in this case i guess. Repatriation might be a problem with a local company though.

1 year of multi entry 90 day max per time is about 150 GBP from the UK last time I looked..
30k THB !! Ouch..

But you would then need to return to your home (U.K) every 90 days i guess? That was the case with the noggie travel-insurance i had.

I had Bupa coverage when I was over for my long(ish) stay. Think it was about £70 and covered me for up to 6 months including all travel and a emergency trip home. But one of the conditions was not working. So may be of no-use to you but this post has increased my post total by one.

That is correct you have to travel back to your home country prior to the 90 days expiring.
There are alot of companies out there who will be able to offer insurance for a 12 month trip just google 12 month travel insurance and a big lists comes up.
Have a good look at the policies and declare all the information.
Try Sta student travel as some one else said.

Filter by underwriters as well. If you get 20 agencies with the same underwriter then there isn't much difference between them. I found Lloyds better than Allianz, cheaper and better.

I use a company called IHI from Denmark. They are a subsidary of BUPA.
I pay an annual fee of around $160USD and it covers me for all medical expenses when travelling up to $ 300 000 USD anywhere in the world. It also covers getting me out of places that will need a heli-lift or the like should I really get in the sh*te.
Most importantly for me they are a "high risk activity insurer" as a few times a year I am climbing mountains between 5000 - 8500 metres around the world which "normal" travel policies wont cover. The policy also covers all other "high risk" activities that "bread and butter" policies wont cover, the only exception being professional motorsports. This year I will climb in Russia, Antartica and South America and the policy will cover me in all places no problems. Outside of the climbing community around the world this policy is not well known but it is used by the great majority of serious high altitude climbers and I have never heard of anyone having a problem with it.
If your son is a typical young adventurer it may be worthwhile investing in this cover just in case. Make sure you check the fine print on your insurance policies because you will find a multitude of "outs" in most policies.
And yes by the way the policies that travel agents sell to you are around 60 or 70% commission. A figure for a years cover was mentioned earlier nearly made me fall off my chair. Look online for the best deals.

Thanks Hagler for your great feedback. I've passed this on to my son.
The travel agent is a friend of ours and didn't know that her company was receiving such a big commission.
Travel insurance can be bought for up to 364 days but is quite expensive, as you saw.
Best wishes,
golfer
