Newbie October arrival

Firstly i would like to thank all the BM for some excellent info.
i shall not arrive in Phuket until mid October, and i shall be staying in Karon.

A few questions
1: How far from Karon beach roundabout to Bangla road ( best way to get there and back)
2: Are there any festivals in mid October or booze bans
3: Have been told to purchase a prepaid thia mobile on arrival (location to do this and aquire top ups)
4: Some parts of the world require tips ,eg USA for almost everything, is this the norm in Phuket, and whats the going rate
(don`t want to sound a cheap charlie but i think tips should be for good service)

ok thats all the immediate questions i need answering for now TIA for you help

Welcome to the Board. You have a lot of time to do some research

-Tuk Tuk to and from Patong at 300B each way.
-Buy a cheap phone on arrival or bring one already unlocked and buy a local SIM card. International calls using 009 at the beginning are cheap.
-Tips. Fairly standard in tourist areas. 10% is normal.

Welcome to the board, you can hire a scooter (150 baht per day) and get around that way if you dare. Also I personally only tip if I have received good service but as they tg's say up to you...

If you like a good drink, play safe and use a tuk tuk. About 10/15mins drive and around 250/300 baht each way.

You can use your own mobile if its been unlocked. Costs around £10 -15 here so cheaper than buying a thai mobile.Just buy a thai sim card. But if you want a cheap thai phone, you can get them from Ocean Plaza in Bangla Rd on the ground floor to the left side of the shop.
Thai sims /top ups can be obtained easily from many locations. the 7/11 stores are favourite.

Tipping is not expected, but its nice to show appreciation for a nice meal or good service. The hotel maids also welcome any spare change you might have when you leave.
How much? Up 2 you really, for a meal 20 - 100baht depending on the type of restaurant. Its not a lot, but helps the poorly paid staff.

Hey and welcome, just one thing if your staying in Karon and coming in October, you do know it will be very quiet in the area your staying and a lot of places will be closed at this time of low season. Patong is still kicking but kata and karon can be ghost towns this time of year !!
