Hi, another newbie here. I’ve been reading this forum for a while now and found lots of useful info here.
I’ve been to Los only once, for 3 weeks in February ’08. I flew from Brussels to BKK with Etihad, which I can highly recommend: great individual entertainment system, decent food and all the free booze you want.
In the first place I came to Los because I was fascinated by Thailand for a long time: the friendly people, the food, the temples, the beaches,... I heard about the p4p-scene but that was not a reason I came here. I had the idea of going with a girl maybe once or twice, just to see what all the fuss was about.
Well, that turned out a bit different... I guess this sounds familiar to a lot of people here.
So here’s my trip report:
Part1: good intentions
So, I started with 4 days Bangkok and stayed in Majestic Suites. I needed the first day to acclimatise to the heat, noise and smells of BKK.
On the second day I took the BTS (great way of transport) and the Chao Phraya express-boat, got lost in crazy Chinatown and sampled the real thaifood for the first time. I eat a lot of thai food at home to, but the real stuff has much more taste (and fire) . Aroi mak mak, didn’t eat any farang food for the rest of my holiday. When I finally found my way back out of the crowded sois I got back on the express-boat... in the wrong direction. When I asked the money-collector if the boat went back to Sathorn (where the BTS-station is), he said “no problem”. He must have thought “let’s f*** with the farang” because I ended up doing the whole route in the wrong direction and back. Well, it was a cheap 3-hours sightseeing-tour (25 baht).
In the evening I took a walk on Sukhumvit and ended in Nana Plaza. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was so overwhelmed by it all that I finally ended back in my room...alone.
The next day I visited the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho, which were all very beautiful. Again I took the express-boat, but figured out how it worked by then and didn’t get f***** this time.
That night a guy told me about the beergarden on soi7 and said it was more relaxed than nana, so I went over there. First I went to the open restaurant across the Beergarden for some food and a couple of beers and to watch the traffic of girls walking in and out of the bar.
Then I went in and when I finally got my courage together smiled to a girl that caught my eye the moment I walked in the bar. She came over and we started talking and drinking. I told her it was my first time in los (I know, not very smart of me) and asked her to show me around BKK. She asked if her friends could join us. I thought “what the hell, the more the merrier” ,so I walked out with three girls and we took a taxi to Khao San Road (their idea). I remember getting some strange looks on Khao San Rd because I was walking there with three TG’s.
When I woke up in the morning with the first girl next to me, all I could remember was coming back from Khao san Road with her alone (don’t know where we lost the other two) and going to a go-go-bar with her. For the rest it was all a bit of a blur. I’m afraid I was very very drunk! But I’m pretty sure I had a good time.
When my hangover was gone, I spend my last day with some shopping in MBK.
Conclusion: For my first days in los I held on to my intentions pretty good: spent most of my time on sightseeing and shopping and took only 1 girl to my room.
Part2: Chiang mai
Then I flew to Chiang Mai with AirAsia; Stayed at Raming Lodge for 4 nights. Raming Lodge is a nice hotel in Lana-style. I booked it with agoda and got a double room for half the price (1350 baht) of a single room-rate.
I really liked Chiang Mai. It’s the second biggest city of Los but it had more of a little town atmosphere after busy Bangkok. Found it very relaxed over there.
On my first night I went to the night bazaar for some T-shirts and shorts and tried my bargaining skills but still paid way too much. But hey, it was still many times cheaper than the prices at home.
On the way back to the hotel I ended up in the entertainment plaza on Loi Kroh rd for a few drinks. Watched a Farang getting beaten by a Thai guy (in the boxing ring). Then a girl? came sitting next to me and we talked for a while. When she asked me to go with me to my room suddenly my LB-alarm went off. I’m still not sure if she was a he or a she but didn’t want to test my luck so went back to my hotel alone again.
The next day I walked through the old city and visited the many wats and went for a massage (without happy ending).
That night I took a stroll along the girlie-bars on Loi kroh Rd. After hearing all the “hello, welcome”my good intentions were pretty much gone and I started paying a few ladydrinks here and there and finally took a girl back to my room. In the bar she was all over me, but once in the room she didn’t look very interested anymore and just went on automatic pilot. I know it’s just work for them, but I still like a bit of enthusiasm.
Next day I booked a trip to Doi Suthep and a hilltribe village. We had a very entertaining female guide and it was a real fun trip.
By then I was already hooked to the Thai girls and started barhopping Loi Kroh rd again.
When I saw a girl I wanted to barfine and bought her a ladydrink, she replied: “Why you young man want to sit with old, pom poi lady like me.” Well I’m 31 years old but I look a lot younger. Everyone always thinks I’m only 24-25 + I weigh only 60 kg (I actually would like to be a little bit more pompoi myself). She was only 23 and not pompoi at all but said she was old, pompoi lady because she had a son of 3 and her Thai boyfriend had left her the moment she was pregnant. She normally only went with older men to have dinner (she said...). I tend to believe her because when we left the bar together all her friends started yelling and giggling at her things like “Oh, Sai go with young man”.
Anyway, she was a real fun girl -in and out of the loom- so I barfined her again the next day. When we were laying in bed that night she turned to me and said in almost perfect Dutch: “ik hou van jou, ik hou erg veel van jou” (Dutch for “I lub you, I lub you too mut”). I was like wtf? I know she probably sais that to every man from Belgium or Holland but I was surprised she could pronounce it so well. Never heard someone who Dutch isn’t their native language speak Dutch that well. Even the Turks or Moroccans that live in Belgium for 20 years have a fatter accent.
Conclusion: Didn’t hold on to my intentions about barfining maybe 1 girl, but still spend most of time on sightseeing. But I sure was hooked to the Thai girls by then.
Part3: Koh Phi Phi and Patong Beach
Then I flew Chiang Mai – BKK – phuket with Airasia again.
When I arrived in Phuket, I took the ferry to Koh Phi Phi to stay there one night. The island itself was very beautiful off course, but I found that lots of the Thai people there were less friendly than the ones in other parts of Los. Maybe they’re tired of all the backpapers, don’t know? I did a sunset trip around Phi Phi without seeing the sunset (clouds) and did some snorkelling. All very nice.
Back in Phuket ditched my luggage at C&N-hotel and took off to Bangla Rd.... with all bars closed. Bugger. It seemed election day or something and all bars were closed for 2 days and a total alcohol-ban. Went for a bite in one of the little sois on Bangla, think it was called “Mengrai Seafood” and still got a beer in a Coca-cola cup. That’s what I like about Los: lots of rules but there’s always a way around them. Same with the smoking-ban in BKK: in a bar there was a A4 “no smoking – 2000 baht fine” sign on every table but everywhere were ashtrays and everyone was smoking their longs out.
Anyway, closed or not, Bangla Rd was still filled with tourists and bargirls, so I started walking up and down Bangla Rd and Beach Rd.
On Beach Rd I eventually found my companion for the rest of my holiday. She sat at the beginning of Beach Rd, so I sat next to her and started talking. She spoke English quite well but seemed very shy. At first I even thought she wasn’t a BG. She also wasn’t the miniskirt or cutoff-jeans type. We went for some more food (I’m hungry all the time in Los) and ended up in my loom. Once there...well, let’s say she wasn’t shy at all once the door was closed.
Called her the day after and met her at Jungceylon. Since the bars were still closed we went for some food and emptied the minibar at my hotel and stayed in my room for the rest of the night.
The next day we went to the bar where she worked. I still don’t know the exact name of the soi. It’s one of the first ones on the right of BanglaRd, coming from Rat-U. It has a sign with Bangla on it. Anyone know the name of that soi?
At the end of the night, when I wanted to barfine her, she said: “No you don’t pay barfine; I met you outside bar, so you don’t have to pay barfine”. Which was nice. Actually, there wasn’t talk about money at all.
This went on for the rest of my holiday. I guess that’s what called “the girlfriend experience”. We spend the day together, she took me to the movies (Chocolate), to Banzaan market for cheap and great food, went swimming on Soi Sanasabai,...
At night we always started in her bar. During the evening I went for a walk along Bangla Rd and some more food. In the meantime she had some ladydrinks with other men and came to sit with me again when I returned.
I also went to her room where she lived with 3 other BG’s. Had dinner there with a bunch of BG’s that all lived around there. (Dinner= eating lots of mussels, clamps and squid with a dipsauce of pure smashed chili’s and nam pla, beer with icecubes, sitting on a dirty cloth outside on the ground)
Then they got out the TV-set and started singing karaoke, which was hilarious. I was prepared for a serious food poisoning the day after, but luckily I could leave the Imodium in my suitcase.
The only downside of her was that I got really exhausted by the end of my trip because she didn’t allow me much sleep at night.
Eight days later came the day I had to leave and we still hadn’t talked about money. So, I asked her. She only wanted 3000Baht. Gave her 5000 instead.
We still keep in touch now by e-mail and sms. And no, you won’t hear me say that she’s “different”. I know that she’s a bargirl and goes with men all the time. But she isn’t a hardcore BG neither; guess she isn’t long enough in the business for that. I also know that she has a sponsor (HE probably thinks she’s different), she was very honest about all that. I’m ok with that. Hey, at least I don’t get the sick-buffalo-stories if someone else is sponsoring her.
When I got back home I didn’t feel good and went to the doctor. His diagnose was: a serious case of LosBlues. So, I followed his advice and have already booked a trip for 5 weeks in June and July.
I plan to see the girl from Patong again, but have told her many times in advance that I’m no rich man (which is true) and that she must not expect any sponsoring from me. She’s ok with that and is even searching a budget guesthouse for me. I also told her that I maybe want to barfine other girls while I’m there. Maybe I will also go to Koh Samui for a week, don’t know yet.
I know it’s dangerous to fall in love with her, but I just have lots of fun with this girl, so that’s a problem for later, I guess.
I’m glad that I’ve already seen some other countries before I discovered Thailand because I know where my future holidays will be now. After one visit I’m already addicted to the place.
Welcome drlazy.
Good TR and some great photo's. You seem to have coped well and eased your way in. Did the tourist thing and not just straight to the bars.
I hope that you have many enjoyable trips back...
Great trip report. Very detailed. An enjoyable read. It's good you had your eyes opened during your first trip and it sounds like you had a good time. Chok Dee!
Glad you had a good time and that you are now addicted .
When in June will you be around ?
It is worth checking out Pattaya if you want something a bit more hardcore.
ALso check out Kon Chang that is very nice .
I arrive in BKK on the 2nd of June. I arrive early in the morning, so I will book a flight the same day to Phuket and stay a couple of days in BKK before I leave on the 7th of July.
I don't think Pattaya would be something for me. I like the nightlife, but I also want to see and do other things than just bars. And for what I heard about Pattaya, it hasn't much more to offer than nightlife and bars. Maybe I'll check out Pattaya for a few days before I go back to BKK, don't know yet.
What is your camera? What software do you use for pics? Very nice photos is why I ask.
Glad you all enjoyed the pictures.
My camera isn't all that special. I use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7. The pros of this camera are a 12x zoom (to get things closer and get a bit of DOF) and a decent macro-function. But it doesn't perform very well in bad light conditions. The pics get very noisy when you go over iso100. But for the price it's a good camera.
For some pics I also use a polarizer-filter (for blue skys and to lower reflections in water,..)
For software I use Photoshop CS3 and some plugins. All my pics go through photoshop (noisereduction, levels, curves, colorbalancing, give them a bit more dynamic range,...) and crop the pics for a better composition.
I still have lots more pics (I took about 1000 pics). Will post some more later.
Well looks like you have done LOS using the forums instruction guide, not a foot out of place except maybe for the 3hr boat ride round BKK, think i did the same first time there...
WTTB and some great pic's too.
