Advice/ideas for my trip
Hey guys/girls,
I'm travelling for the first time to Thailand (4 weeks duration), Any help or advice would be well appreciated!
Flying into Bangkok and have a week with Thai Intro
Anyone used these? bad or good news? Looks very interesting.
I would really like to travel after the first week to Phuket and spend two weeks there then fly back to Bangkok for the final week.
What sort of money would I be spending on a medium budget?
Can you get accommodation shared for £5 p/n?
Are the trips alot cheaper in Thailand, rather than booking advanced online?
Jay

Depends a bit on what you want to do. Out of 100% what is the percentage you want to spend on culture, nature and entertainment?
50% of your time in Bangkok seems overkill to me. I have been to Thailand three times. The first time a few days in Bangkok but for me that's all I needed . The last two times I flew straight on from Bangkok airport to my next destination.
Never heared of Thai intro. It seems to me better to do it by yourself. It is not that hard.
But the most important question is those percentages. So perhaps you can reply with that first.

Don't book any trips advanced online. You are likely to pay more than locally.

Thanks for the reply mate,
the first week with ThaiIntro.com, we visit a number of places within the week if you follow this link it'l show exactly what I'd be doing ( thailand itinerary)
Looks like a very good start to the holiday, they pick me up from airport etc and do week full of trips...what do u think?
I really want to have a full packed holiday, meeting people and site seeing as much as I can, culture, lifestyle of thailand, islands? plenty of beaches and alot of nightlife for socialising??... So would you recommend not to go back to Bangkok for the last week?

You can do this all by yourself and likely much cheaper than the package.

Why spend 50% of your trip in Bangkok? It is a big and dirty city with a few good attractions but one week is, to me at least, more than enough.
After Bangkok, take Air Asia or any other budget airline to Chiang Mai for a week, take some tours with one of them to the golden triangle then visit Phuket with optionally Krabi and Phi Phi island for two weeks and then go straight home through Bangkok airport.
Anyways, it's up to you, just my 2cents.

279GBP, or 17,600 baht for the service and you get this money saving advice? From their web site:
"- Always ask for seconds on the plane. Even if you're full you can store it in your backpack for later.
- Carry rice everywhere. When you go out for dinner you can just ask for some hot water.
- Shave your head. You'll save money on shampoo, haircuts, combs and mousse.
- Drink water or take appetite suppressants before eating out."
I assume they are just joking you.

Hello and welcome to the board.
I would ditch them if it isn't too late, I agree it seems like a joke. Look around on this forum, or use the search function instead. Basically, talk to more experienced thai-travellers. Cheaper and better guides are sure to be had, just use common sense.

Hi and Welcome
Do as much reading and research as possible.
I agree with the others you do not need to spend too much time in Bangkok. You should go to Pattaya as well as visiting Chang Mai, Patong Beach etc.
Do not visit the upper gogo in Patpong (bangkok) they will rip you off.
If some one tells you that a temple is shut today ignore them.
Just tey and keep your wits about you. If something is too good to be true then may be it is. Don't go down a dark alley way.
Watch out for the taller ladies.
Have fun

4 weeks is a pretty long time, so you can arrange a few trips after you have spent a few days in BKK. As suggested, fly Air Asia ( Welcome to airasia.com...Now Everyone Can Fly...) to Chaing Mai for a week, then back through BKK onto Phuket for a week, spend a few days in Krabi and Phi Phi, then maybe a week in Pattaya before going back to BKK and home.
It really depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for. Chaing Mai has the elephant trekking and temples (as do Phuket), great beaches and nightlife in Phuket, and full on nightlife in Pattaya and BKK.
Keep reading the forum (the search can help you find specific things) and ask away if you need any info.

Seems to me you are a bit too worried, don't worry the trip will come together by itself! If you are going soon, then you are going in the low season, then there will be no real need for advanced bookings and prices are low. If you go in September or later it is going to be more busy and you need to think of some advanced bookings. If you go around December and January, pre booking is pretty much mandatory and prices will be much higher.
For travel in Thailand there are a few budget airlines:
Air Asia and Nok Air are the best price wise. Bangkok Air and Thai Airways tend to be more expensive. Make sure you understand that Bangkok has two airports.
You can book one way tickets online, and usually if you book up to a few days in advance you can get a decent price. No need to book round trips since you won't get a discount.
Alternatively you could take the bus and the train but generally that costs you a lot of time. One exception is the night train to Chiang Mai.
For accommodation you can use various websites, I happen to like asiarooms.com, but the cheapest budget places usually have no online presence.
Chiang Mai is very cheap and if you want strict budget you can get accommodation for under 250 BHT a day. You want to book a place near or in the old city. No point in booking trips in advance. There are lots of small travel agencies in Chiang Mai. Make sure you do not book a trip in a hotel, they are almost always more expensive.
Go on an elephant ride, whitewater rafting, visit the big temple, visit the mountain tribes and take a tour to the golden triangle, but don't take the one day tour, that one is too short for the distance you have to cover.
From Chiang Mai there is a direct flight to Phuket on Thai airways but this one is much more expensive than taking a Air Asia to Phuket with a stop over in Bangkok airport. If you want nightlife in Phuket then stay in Patong otherwise stay at the more relaxed beaches. Plenty of tours from here as well. If you like Phi Phi I would suggest not to take a one day tour but instead take a taxi to Phuket town, then take the ferry to Phi Phi. You have to stay overnight since you won't have time to see the island since the ferry goes back a few hours later and they only go once a day. From Phi Phi you could take the ferry to Krabi or back to Phuket. You can fly back to Bangkok both from Krabi or Phuket.

Thanks OM! you really have helped!
I've been online most of today and reading alot, I've put this together for a rough ideas for the trip. (remember its not set in stone)
(3rd June)
> Fly to Bangkok,
- 4 Nights
> Bus to Pattaya
- 7 Nights
> Bus/taxi to Bangkok Airport
- Fly to Phuket
> Arrive Phuket
- Phuket - 4 Nights
> Ferry to Phi Phi Islands
- 2 Nights
> Ferry to Krabi
- 4 Nights
> Bus to Phuket
- 3 Nights
> Fly back to Bangkok
- 3 Nights
Fly Home...
Too much?
I realise that trips wont just work out the way you plan them so the above is just loose guide to what I would like to see, although I really want to visit Chiang Mai... I may just forget the whole ideas and just land and then do whatever happens..any ideas?

Looks doable.
7 nights Pattaya? Do you like entertainment?
If so, you might consider cutting Krabi, apart from a few bars on Ao Nang there is not much to do entertainment wise. Phi Phi is one of the world's beauties though, don't cut that. The most beautiful location and also the most remote, is Laem Tong beach.
And in case you did not know, the entertainment location on Phuket is Patong beach. Again if you like to have a lot of entertainment in Phuket make sure you get a place in Patong otherwise you are going to pay a lot for tuk tuks and taxis.
One more thing it does not make any sense to go from Phuket to Phi Phi to Krabi and then back to Phuket. You waste half a day and money traveling back to Phuket in a boring bus ride. Just stay the 7 nights in Phuket and from Krabi fly direct back to Bangkok. Remember one way tickets are just half the price of roundtrip tickets.
So when are you going so we can help you in giving you estimates of costs?

haha youre joking right lol how much commision are you charging haha
Entertainment and site seeing is the main priorities, a mix of both
I fancy Krabi due to the attractions such as Hot waterfalls, Ao Nang Beach, Tiger Cave temples...but really wish I had more time for Chiang Mai to visit the Mae Sa Elephant Camp, do you think I could go there for a couple of days?
Is there any chance to fly from Krabi to Chiang Mai via Bangkok? then I could have couple days there then back to Bangkok?

Thai Airways does fly direct from Chiang Mai to Phuket but only in that direction and is more expensive. In the other direction you need a stopover at Bangkok airport. You effectively lose a day each way.
Not joking, when do you fly? Let's see how far we can figure this one out.

No problem. Remember with the budget airlines you book legs, you cannot book Krabi - Chiang Mai in one booking you have to book Krabi - Bangkok and then Bangkok Chiang Mai. The order of visit of the various places can matter a lot, since the budget airlines have frequent specials to certain destinations, keep that in mind.

right, I have put in chiang mai in the trip,
(3rd June depature from England)
> Fly to Bangkok,

> Bus/taxi to Bangkok Airport
- Fly to Chiang Mai
> Arrive Chiang Mai
- Chiang Mai - 3 Nights

Fly Home...
What do you think? I dont know what you mean by legs?
Chiang Mai to Krabi is more expensive but still cheap in GBP (aprox £39) 2250 thb, other than that the rest of flights internal are very cheap, 500 thb!
Thanks OM!

Looks like a fun trip.
Let us know how you make out in Krabi. There isn't much written about it on the forum. I'm going in Nov.

been to bkk 3 times & 3-4 days i would say is sufficent, make sure you do the FLOATING MARKET & BRIDGE/RIVER KWAI, cannot belive you will be missing koh samui out of your itinery, after bkk, phuket & pattaya you would have appriciated the laid back scene, but still with plenty nightlife & bg's, great beaches and fantastic massages. a heads up for bkk check out Coming Soon... & remember never go upstairs in patpong rd 1/2

Sounds like youve got a good trip planned out mate... I also did what you did on my second trip only i stayed at a few more places but i stayed for a longer time...
The only thing i can reccommend is that you spend a week in Patong(Phuket)... Out of all the places ive been to in LOS i feel most at home in Patong, dont get me wrong all the other places are just as beautiful but in Phuket you can relax if you want, go for touristy trips or party for the whole time your there...and alot of BM's there to help you out if you need any advice or just a drinking friend.. So it kind of caters for everyone...
Anyway mate im sure you'll have a blast..
Good Luck
