First trip to Phuket...questions...

Whats up? I am making my first trip to Phuket in late August and staying for 3 months to train Muay Thai. I have looked all over this site and I must say, its very informative. I just had a few questions since my situation for being over there training fiffers from many of ya'll's. My accomadations are taken care of so I will only need to bring money for food and whatever else I get into. I will only be going out partying once a week, most likely saturday nights. I will be eating 4-5 times daily but not in nice resturants, good and clean-thats all I will be looking for. So, to you vets out there, how much baht a week do you all think I will need for food and extras? I am thinking $100USD/wk will do me good in eating and going out once a week. Also, is it failry easy to get around without renting a car or motorbike? Thanks and great site...

You may find that a little bit tight. Eating simply 4 - 5 times a day, even at a dollar a meal will only leave you 65 bucks a week for partying or whatever else you get into.

Motorbike is definately necessary you can hire for between 100-200bht a day depending on your negotiating skills.

If you eat cheap only went out one night and had a few beers with no girls you may be able to get buy on 4000 bht for the week but I would probably double that if you're eating all the time. Then as SafeAs pointed out once you arrive it will be hard to sit at home every night with so much going on.

I am training at Soi Tad-eyat off Chaofa West Rd. in Chalong. I have figured I should at least put away 200-300USD/wk...I really will not be going out more than once a week. I am 22 years old and have worked in a bar in a college town for the past 3 years dealing with gorgeous girls and booze and everything else. I havent had a drink in 3 months as I am training now as well. A motorbike is definetly necessary? I do not plan on really going anywhere except to eat during the week...I will have plenty of cash set aside either way. I am just trying to figure out how much I need to save this summer before I leave in late August. Theres no jobs for Americans over there during the weekends or anything is there? I have a business degree and such...woudlnt mind making a few extra bucks 1 or 2 days a week while Im out there...thanks for the info guys...

You may be able to get away without a motorbike but it's only about $100 USD to hire one for the month and when it's 30 deg plus with high humidity even a walk to the mail box is tiring, plus if you want to see the island which is essential you'll need one.

Employment is hard to come by for expats when Thai labour costs are so low but you could always try if your willing to get paid very little.

If you budget on USD $250 per week you should have plenty to get by.

4 meals per day at $2.50 per meal is $70 per week for food. Figure $25 for a Saturday night at the bars should be enough if you are not an alcoholic or treating others to drinks. A 22 year old boxer should be able to get girls for free. That leaves $5 for incidentals. You don't really need a motorcycle. If you hook up with a girl with one, she can show you the island.

If you eat at places which don't cater to tourists, the real Thai places, or buy food fraom street vendors, you could probably squeeze in a fifth meal or have a little extra cash.

This would be a very tight budget with not much allowance for unforeseen costs, but not impossible. Try to budget a little more, if you can. The more, the better!
