Hey all, a few new guy ?'s...
Hey all,
Great forum; I've learned a lot from perusing!
I've a few questions, mostly related to where I'm staying when I visit next month. I went ahead and booked a room at the new Marriot up north of Patong........I'm thinking now that was not such a good move as it's pretty far from the action and I've actually tried to cancel, but they are not being cool with that. So, with that said, am I screwed in terms of expensive taxi rides to get into Patong? Other options available? Also, I've read elsewhere that they're guest friendly and I've booked at the double occupancy rate, so I'm hoping that I don't have a problem; basically does anyone have any insight into the Marriot situation. It looks like a nice place, but I'm afraid I'll be bored. I'm also wanting to get cerified to scuba; any recommendations? I've heard South Siam divers is pretty good.....
This is my first trip to Thailand and I'm pretty psyched. I'm travelling solo so if anyone wants to hook up for a beer and give me some pointers, I'd be a buying. I'm living and working in Sri Lanka right now, which is pretty cool in it's own right.
Anyways, thanks for any info; much appreciated.

the marriott is pretty far from patong, although it looks absolutely beautiful. ive stayed at the jw marriott in bangkok and they were guest friendly. some of these bigger hotels, belive it or not, are guest friendly as long as your smart and quiet. as for taxi rides, you will be paying alot. what you might want to do, is try and hook up with one taxi guy up there, let him know that you will use only him, and try to negotiate some prices. id say hed want to charge you 300-400bht, try and get it down to 250baht each way if you tell him you will only use him and get his mobile #

if you have paid by credit card iam sure you can cancel and get a
full refund if you give enough notice . id say a month is enough
iam only going on what happens in the uk .
you will probably have to pay a massif joiner fee aswell
when taking girls back to your room as its proper hotel

I stayed at Pattaya Marriott. Guest friendly and beautifull hotel. Large garden. For the rest I agree with Marc26. Way too far from Patong

Thanks for all the replies; I'm battling with them right now to cancel. I don't mind forfeiting the deposit, but they want me to pay the full cost of the room for the time I booked it, which I find pretty ridiculous.
With that said, any recommendations on nice hotels closer to Patong? I just got divorced and am looking to blow some blow some dough and party-on. Thanks,
BD

Karon. Golden Sand Inn. Nice Appartements for 600 Baht Low Season. Nice Garden and Pool. Average Restaurant. 160 Baht and a 10 Minute Ride with TukTuk to Patong. Stayed there for nearly 2 Weeks. No Problems to bring girls in. And beach is just a street crossing away.

Never had a problem with joiner fees in pattaya Marriott. And different lady every time. That is why I stay there: good hotel and never problem with JF. But that is Pattaya, not Phuket. Seems no problem with JF in BKK Marriott either.

Hey Fellas,
Thanks for the advice. I spoke to my CC company and they'll take care if it. If I loose a deposit, oh well. I did book a room in town, which should work out much better! I wish I had found this forum before I started all that Marriot business; tons of great info for a newbie. If any of ya'll are in town 6/17-28 and want to hook-up for a beer or three, let me know. Thanks again,
BD

Blackdog,
What do you mean by town? I hope not Phuket town, because then you are back at square one. Book in Patong or maximum the beach close by, Kalim, Kamala or Karon.

God! I looked at the rates for Marriot .. really expensive. For that price, why don't you rent a house or an appartment in a resort ? It will be bigger, with all facilities and you will pay probably less.
Las Feb, I rented a house, 2 rooms, big livingroom, big kitchen, terrace, little garden and a common swimming pool most of the time only for me in Nai Harn and it was cleaned everyday. I paid 30.000 bath for 22 days in high season, and it was my home. There was a restaurant and a pub with pool inside the resort, many bars and restaurants very close, also some saunas. Of course, I needed a car (at least a good motorbike) to go to Phuket Town, Patong, Kamala, Karon or Kata, but I found a Suzuki Carabian for 500 bath/day.
It was so really easy to go to Patong some nights (and if I was too drunk to drive back, i rented a cheap room in Patong for 600 bath, for example at CNN).
It was 20 -25 minutes by car from Patong, 15 minutes from Kata-Karon and a very nice place to stay for quiet holidays, far away from noise.
Just my opinion, everyone has his own preferences, but I spent there the best holidays I had ever had in Phuket..... I must add that I had my GF at home too, not a BG. But I know that many BG's would like so much to spend a few days in this quiet area, as it looks more Thai than farang land
Look where I staid on http://www.deliver-it.nl/houses/STR/20041122-p0006/ .. I rented one of the small family houses, just near the swimming pool and it was fantastic. I add that it's always possible to deal a better price. Just be friendly and polite

I never used Marriott in Phuket,as it is too far away from Patong and even expensive to my standards. But I like it in Pattaya for 3-4 days. Close to walking street, big garden and swimming pool as I don't like the beach in Pattaya.
You may like a house in Nai Harn, and maybe I will think of it once I retire and stay for a few months in Thailand.
But I am living alone in Belgium. I have a cleaning lady but that doesn't mean I dont have to do some housekeeping. Washing, ironing and so is no problem, I have done that my whole sailing life. But when I am on holidays I want to be pampered. Breakfast before my nose in the morning without having to buy it in shops or going to a resto some km from my bed. Laundry at hand... I don't want to do one bit of work. I will pay for the luxury I get, and I stay in hotels between 3000 and 5000 Baht a night. But I work hard enough, make excellent money and have no family. So I prefer to give it to hotels, bars, restaurants and other amusement.
And no way am I going to drive a mototbike or even a car in Thailand. I have my hotel in Patong and if you see me going home at night you would understand. And at the times I need transport, like going to play golf, I have my regular taxidrivers who offer me a good price and if I calculate it, it is cheaper than renting a car (and no problem if you drink or if an accident happens).
But then, everybody has his way of spending his holidays, and mine suits me like yours suits you.

It's worth noting that the JW Marriott Phuket is a fantastic hotel, having stayed in great hotels all over the world i would rate it as one of the best.
It is absolutely not suited to someone on his(or her) own and is very much full of couples and families.
There were some great deals available last year which meant it was around $50/night but these seem to have dried up recently.

hey all,
thanks again for the advice........by town I did mean Patong! Ya'll were spot on about the Marriot; great looking hotel, which is what I was looking for, but after thinking about it over the weekend, I realized it was way too far out of Patong and I would probably be way bored by myself there. Just to give you some insight into the where and why, I was looking for a top-notch hotel to celebrate my divorce at with some diving, BG, and partying action thrown in. I'm currently working in Sri Lanka, making some pretty good dough, so $$ really wasn't a consideration, within reason. I now am staying at the Baan Yin Dee on the advice of one of the forum members, which looks great and is close-in to Patong. I'm really looking forward to checking out Patong and as I mentioned earlier, would be up for meeting some fellow forum members for a beer or two. Thanks again and I'll be LOSing in a few weeks!

Man, are lucky I read this- Cancel the Marriott NOW- too far from the action but a nice overpriced hotel- call Marriotts 800-marriott and cancel, do not call the hotel, have the chain office cancel with no charge-many hotels in Patong cost around 600-1200 bahtnight with no charge for ladies- ask first-but call the places people have recommended on this site-1000 baht night for a lady, no more- ask her and she will say ok most of the time- do not act like a newbie-
