how to ask?
Ok guys, as I have said this will be my first trip to asia, I dont speak a word of thai and was wondering if I will have trouble making myself understood to the bar girls. I have read that you should ask for what you want, but how much english is understood in the bars?

Planter,
Most people don't speak Thai and they get what they want (and I think most people want the same thing from a bar girl). So it realy makes no difference if you don't speak Thai, except if you want to hold a conversation on world economics, nuclear science, philisophy, brain surgery or something similar. But then I think she won't be very interested to say the least. But she will listen as long as you pay her drinks and there is a chance of her being barfined.
By the way they pick up English quite fast. I have met new arrived ladies who didn't speak English and seeing them back a few months later they had some basic knowledge.

I haven't met a BG yet who was fluent in English. But the ones who have been there awhile, aren't too hard to understand once you get used to the way they murder the language! With the newbie girls, knowing a little Thai helps, but they know a few words and you can play charades or pantomiming for the rest. My first trip there, I hooked up with a girl who didn't know more than 10 words of English and we had a great time all the same, and communicated as we needed with hand signs, gestures, looks, and body language.
If you are the same as most guys, they know what you want before you ever open your mouth. You smile with a funny wee bit of a horny leer in your eyes, they feel your hard-on rubbing up against them when your standing close to them or dancing, and they know what you want!
BTW, the word they use for f*ck is boom-boom, the words for penis are c*ck or d*ck, which oddly enough are acceptable to use, but don't ever use the Thai word for c*ck, which is kuwaii, or they might get very upset, it is a no-no. The word for ******* is "sa-moke"(smoke). Those are Thai versions of English words, but they all know them, even the newbies.

A book which you may find very useful - English Thai Bar Guide and has many of the basics of making small talk with the girls.
It has thai script underneath all of the english phonetic spelling of thai phrases which is useful if you are having trouble pronouncing anything you read, as you can show the thai script to the bar girl.
If you are heading to patong in phuket I believe Nicke at Mai thai bar may have some copies of this book. If not you can order from Bangkok books

also, don't forget that you are speaking the international language, $, and that will get your point across. The girls know what they are there for and so do you. If she can not understand you, see if she has a friend around who understands english or a bar owner or even a Mamasan and ask them to help you. If you want something special, a**l, 3 some lesbian show, make sure they understand so that there aren't any problems.
I was in the Philippines in March scuba diving and went to a disco in Puerto Galera with a buddy of mine. I already had a girl with me but he was looking for one. He picked out this little hottie with a great face, beautiful body, and the perfect "f**k me" look and bought her a beer. After a second beer he looked at me and said there is no spark. I said what do you mean. He says she is not really talkative. I asked him if he wanted me to find a rocket scientist for him or was he there to have a little fun. He finally went with my suggestion and stayed with her for 14 days and just went back to see her again and not do any scuba diving.
The point is that they are all a little shy at first but they warm up quickly. Most of the girls will not do anything special like the above mentioned but you will find a few who will. You can always ask the regular BM's at the bar and see if they know.

Take butterflyblondes advice and try to buy the book. Everybody at the forum has mentioned that it is a really good book, fun to read, and great to read when looking back at your last trrip to los. Follow some of the threads where they talk about the book

he he he ... English is not my native language, nor Thai native language ... maybe it helps me a bit because it's often easier for me to understand foreign people than native english people. I guess it would be the same if you had to speak french. In english, I use a simple vocabulary, and with Thai people, i forget grammary, expressions, etc.
For example, when I talk to a Thai, I avoid sentences as "I would like to go" or "I have never been there" ... Say "I want go" or " I never go there" I call it "Thai-English" and I try to adapt my language to Thai grammar, it makes things easier.

I think most Thais have an easier time to understand Thai-English than proper English.

First time to asia for Planter. Don`t worry about the language the BG`s will find you immediately once you get off the airplane. They have a nose or a sixth sense for newbies.

The problem with Thai-English, is after one hangs around enough Thai BG, one gets in the habit of slipping into that slang all the time everytime one meets some lass from Thailand. This is most embarassing when one meets a Thai lass who got her university degree in Europe or North America, and one says their first dozen sentences to her in Thai-English. And then she replies in perfect English with a knowing smile as to what one has been up to during their Thai visits, before they met her.

Ask politely
It has just occurred to me that a newbie might be wondering exactly what to say to a girl. I know the first time I went to LOS I was excited and even a little apprehensive.
Well, I expect there are many different approaches but here's how I approach it. I have a few drinks at a bar and avoid getting too friendly with any girl in particular while I am looking around. Sometimes, a girl will attach herself to you before you've had chance to make your mind up and then I personally find it difficult to send a girl away. Also, I've had a problem before where I did say no to one girl but then the one I wanted wouldn't go with me because she considered me to be the other girl's property.
When you have decided which girl you want, eye contact and a smile is often enough to bring her to you and then you can chat to her and buy her a drink. After a drink or maybe two, simply ask her if she would like to go with you to your hotel. There's no need to mention sex because that is implicit.
If she says yes you can then establish whether you want her to stay longtime (LT) which means until the morning or shorttime (ST) which generally means a couple of hours or so. Having done this you can then let her know how much you are planning to give her. I think this is better than asking how much she wants. At least if she doesn't agree to the amount you propose, you have opened the bidding at a sensible level.
It is important during the whole process to be polite and nice. The girls will be polite and nice to you and if you're not the same with them they may well reject you.
I mostly use a bar in Karon where the girls are a little gentler and often I don't even mention money and neither do they. I know what the going rate is and I just give them money in the morning.
