Water?
Did a search on Drinking water, very strange, very little information!.Could it be that BMs dont drink water.I wonder why?
Anyway, serious part now.
What is the situation with drinking water in Phuket? Is it standard to drink bottled water and in particular, what is the advice regarding things like salads washed in local water etc.
Thanks

Bottled water is pennies, 10baht, and everyone drinks loads of water because of the heat.
I can't honestly say I have ever had salad in Patong, or seen any come to that, but that is more likely to be my culinary habits than lack of produce. Most of the eating places seem fairly clued up though, so I would not worry too much.
A pharmacist once told me not to eat food that has been rained on and I am religous about that now, but water and hygiene are not much of an issue generally. I'm never far away from a dose of immodium though, just in case.

Depends on what water supply your on. Town supply or otherwise. They say the town water supply is safe to drink, but we dont. I clean my teeth with it but always drink bottled water, I even give my dogs bottled water.
As far as worrying about whats been cleaned and cooked with what water, I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it, as your not very likely to know or find out easily.
One thing to religiously avoid is places that use shaved ice off the big blocks, and not the cubed processed type ice. Otherwise just enjoy yourself.
Then there is the issue of the different brands of bottled water. People tell me that there is no difference, but I always drink Singha brand water. I think it tastes better.

Never had a problem with salads or ice for that matter. The advice I have had is stick to bottled water! Better safe than sorry! Or even better stick to beer!! Just remember to wipe the lip of the bottle.

I my experience i've had no problems with bottled water or anything suspected to be washed in it!
The only thing which has got me (twice) is seafood. I've ben told that its because of the bacteria inside it, that we (some Westerners) are not used to. But if you do 'get over it'. Last time i had no probs at all.
But im sure they are bm's who are bigger experts on this!

Occasionally you might come across seafood salads, thai & very spicy.
This is the one salad I would recommend you avoid as I have noticed some of the seafood ingredient look raw...not a good idea.
Farang style salads with egg/ham/cheese etc...are more likely to be safe.

Fresh seafood can't be the problem. The problem is that the seafood is not fresh, and it is stored in open air on some ice at temperatures above 30° C. If it is not sold, it goes back in the reefer to be shown the next day, and the next day, and...
Try to get live seafood or at least fresh.
I've seen ray sold. Ray is one of my favourites, but it has to be fresh. There is no fish that smells so fast (and tastes ) like ammoniak as ray. Sometimes I can smell ray from 10 meters away in Phuket.

I would strongly recommend to avoid water at all. It is scientificly prooven that after the consumtion of water you may actual start to rust from the inside. On the other side if it is brewed and certain materials are added it is considered to be safe. This safe water is mostly sold under the name`Singha´.

You don't want to drink water. Fish fornicate in it.
I once heard a joke about univ.
The professor wanted to prove that drinking alcohol is bad. He showed a glass of water and a glass of alcohol. Then he put a worm in each glass. The worm in the glass of alcohol dissolved, the one in the glass of water not.
He asked the students what was the conclusion of the test.
One "clever" student on the backrow answerred: "the test proves that you don't get worms from drinking alcohol."

I have to agree with Diver. Since lving here I only drink water when I absoulutely have to, I usually stick to something that has alchohol in it just to be safe and I drink alot of it. I also steer clear of most vegetables (very dangerous) and concentrate on pizza, BBQ meats (don't know what some are though cuzz I've been drinking alchohol) and the tuna puffs they sell in 7-11(not the ones on soi paradise).
Follow this regimen and you should be safe.
