Tuk tuk fares
Okay, they are too high and a rip-off. But within Patong, what is the amount to offer that is reasonably likely to be accepted?

100 baht within patong is common, but geir said earlier this year more and more asked for 200 baht when he wanted to go to Nanai. (5-10 mins ride)

Have to say that the tuk-tuk drivers genuinely grit my shit, motorbike taxis are better but walking is king.

Damn, you guys make me feel cheap. ... Guess I am.
Typically, if I am by myself, I will rarely pay the Tuk Tuk driver any more than 60 baht for a short hop in Patong (I was last in Patong in May this year). Yes, many times I end up walking, as the Tuk Tuk drivers refuse to budge in their price, and so do I. The Phuket Tuk Tuk mafia is notorious for high prices and "price fixing".
Some slightly dated web sites with Tuk Tuk pricing information to help the "newbies" negotiate:
http://phuket.as/transport.php
Phuket Gazette article:
http://phuketgazette.net/issuesanswe...ils.asp?id=373
While its practically impossible to get any Tuk Tuk driver to agree to 50 baht, I have commonly got them to agree to 60 baht for a short hop in Patong. Of course they will usually only do that if they are by themselves, and not with their peers. They will often agree to 70 baht when in the presence of their peers.
And of course, if its unbearably hot (and I like the heat, but sometimes the heat is too much even for me), or if its well past midnight (and I am truly plastered, or in a hurry), I will "break my rule" and settle for 100 baht.

Thanks guys. I usually walk, but there are times that doesn't work too well such as when you have just left a Bangla night spot with a new friend and NEED to get back to the hotel.

wooow so the prices are the same as 2,5 years ago... Coz within Patong it costed around 100 B... It was possible to lower it to 70 but on the other hand 30 B wasn't worth the effort... Though I agree 100 B is a rip-off considering what everything else cost... However it's a cool ride and they drive like maniacs so you have to hold on to the bar for your very life cool...

I know what you mean. I spent 20 minutes haggling over a watch til I realized the difference was about a dollar. By the way, it is a TAG fake and I challenge anyone to tell the difference. and it is keeping perfect time.

Offical from where, could be good to have a copy on some offical letterhead or such to show drivers when bartering fare.
bit like marc26 dont haggle over small amounts but sometimes fares asked are bloody stupidly high.
check out the prices in sydney, they are bloody high

Legally all registered tuk tuks are supposed to have that on display inside the vehicle..
Good luck finding one of those sheets or getting those rates tho..

Think the rates had gone up to 300 bhat for high season and they would need your passport for the rental.
Thats why i got 1 from my wife's friend for 100 bhat a day and whats best.. no papers required for the rental.
Not to mention the number of road block the police had set up all around Patong. It impossible to ride around without being stopped.
During my last trip I actually flash my Army ID when they ask for my bike licence and they let me off. They have not idea what i show them 55555....
