Long-term housing

Hello Everyone -

I am moving to Phuket this November, planning to stay for minimum of one year, and want to find an apartment rather than rent a room. Are there any sites I can go to for help in finding a place to live prior to arriving? I strongly suspect that negotiating rent now (beginning of August) will be radically easier than trying in November. Correct me if I am wrong. Any areas which I should avoid? I have spent time on the island before, but will be working this time in Phuket Town, rather than just on holiday. What should I expect for rental costs for a one bedroom, clean, safe place within striking distance ( 15 minutes say) of Patong and Phuket City. Kathu?

Any help would be appreciated.

8 - 15 is a fair range (15 being high and nice clean / farang spec / AC etc) under 8 will probably be a little rough but depends if you have time to paint things up and or wish to buy furniture etc..

Kathu is a good compromise and there are some small houses dotted about (loch Palm / waterfall side especially).. The 'Dulwich' shortcut makes a neat way of getting out to the bypass road north and is a good area for being fairly central..

The rental market is not very well catered to in agents.. Only high priced farang operated things work via the web with one exception.. http://www.houseinphuket.com/ run by Kuhn Welta seems to be a good service.. I have heard nothing but good things about her and she has fair prices.

Most rental homes are found by hunting.. Sings hung in Thai have the best rates so a Thai speaker (reader) is really helpful..

Lots of stuff available in Patong due to being quiet..

Damn just lost a post..

She has 2 nice looking things in Kathu listed.. an ok 9500 2 bed and a nice looking 3 bed with ensuite etc for 15.. Bot unfurnished though..

Contact her and describe your needs, she seems to be very helpful..

You may want to also consider the Chalong side.. Expat community.. Lots of places to rent around there.. Not expensive region.. etc..

Thanks for the leads!

I understand that Chalong sometimes has no electricity. Is that true? I'm figuring that the tourist places get first priority on power, and Chalong or Nai harn aren't exactly those kind of places. I like how close they are to Phuket Town though.

That's true. "Fai dap". But it's everywhere on the island at it lasts not long. We only had to burn candles 2 times in 4 years.
Living in Thailand is going back in infrastructure 20-25 years. But that is no problem at all. Chalong is not more sensitive then any other area.
I live there myself. A good choice.

As say Burg, it can happen everywhere. I know that, in Phuket Town, it happened 2 times the last 3 months.

I like Chalong too, it is close to everything (Phuket Town, Patong, Kata-Karon, Rawai, nai Harn). Very good location thanks the circle point with roads that lead everywhere quickly. Chalong is also quiet with many good restaurants and some bars, many shops, etc.... I would like to find a house or appartment there next month.
