I went to LOS for the first time in August o5 on impulse due to my wife deciding leaving me,having to sell the business and so on.. and thought b*****ks ! need to get away so it was either the maldives or Phuket as i always wanted to do my PADI course, flipped a coin and landed in phuket armed with five good books and every intention to chill and take time to re evaluate my life....then i found Patong ! Having read the forum threads over the past few weeks i know i am not alone in having full blown thai fever and it is amazing how it affects you long after you come back home. I can honestly say i did not go for the BG experience but bumped into a fellow UK man on his own and he took me to patong. For anyone on the edge of the cliff or hovering above it, take the leap of faith and go... you will never be the same again. its been differcult for me on returning to get a grip on work and anything else, i know what the bargirls are and what they can do for you but it makes a reasonable intelligent and rational man complete and utter jelly ! and i can relate to other threads where grown men weeping at airports or want to marry them within a week etc... leaving with thier wallets empty but happy. The experience has changed my outlook on western women(now known as whitebait) and if they could absorb just a fraction of what the BG's do for us in LOS , we would all be happier men. Why do we all try and keep in contact with these women and send money etc.. when untimately we know what they are and what they will be doing the minute we head for the airport.
The mate i met in LOS and I talk every day about LOS (been back since AUG) and the fever shows no sign of going away as we planned to go back in may 06 but cant cope and are going back on 28th Dec to 9th Jan
I for one my grateful i stumbled across Patong as the trip probably saved my sanity and makes me smile every day. if there is a cure don't tell me !
P.S any one want five unread books to read !

I think there's a bit more to the los experience than ''they're just girls''

After all, what made you live out there, unless you are a thai that is ?

Exactly, thats what I'm saying, I came here for Weather, lifestyle, different work ethic, family, lack-of-violence, nightlife, positive outlook on life, food, costs, friendliness.

I've never met someone, turned to jelly and one week later headed home and sent them my life savings, I came out here and liked it and stayed. I'm just saying theres more to life here and holidays here than just shagging young birds.

Yeah I know Benjy,

But he is knew and probably full of excitement like many of us were, until the reality kicks in that is.

I agree with all you said in the first line apart from lack of violence, there is certainly a few serious incidents here and there all over los, with plenty of happenings in patong too. Even the cops are getting shot at in phuket.

yeah but back in the Uk I would see at least 5 or 6 fights a night, I think I've seen about three here in 3 years, albeit one involved me getting punched in the face by a tuk-tuk driver for some reason I cant fathom or remember.

But yes looking back to when I first came here it was an eye opener, I guess after a while you just look at it as a conveniance - Oh I could order a pizza in and watcha film or go and get laid. You kind of settle into teh fact that yes you can get laid by just about anyone whenever you want, dont get me wrong if you dropped me back in the UK I wouldnt have a clue how to go about getting laid by some fat minger who'd expect me to buy her 6 rounds of drinks before I have the privelage of shagging her.

I agree with SteveT. Work productivity has dropped significantly as I browse these threads during the day. I think the "fever" description is a good one.

Benjy,

Did you actually read Steve T's original thread about how he just had his wife leave him and he had to sell his business? He went for a vacation and to learn how to scuba dive and ended up finding Patong. He did not fall in love with a BG, he fell in love with all the Bg's and the nightlife. He needed a change and it has given him a reason to enjoy life. He has not sent anyone any money, just been there once and going back again. He will have more time to enjoy the culture on his next trip. You moved there, you have all the time in the world to enjoy all that Thailand offers. He went there to scuba dive and relax.

Welcome to the club mate, it bites deep when it happens. I've said it before but Thailand, and I'm sure many other places, are a revelation to us kicked-to-bits refugees: enjoy.

Here we have some wisdom. The majority of the Patong visitors on the other hand, think the opposite. What's more to life than shag yourself to death in beautiful Thailand? And then they return home. Counting the days and minutes they can return and do it all over again. And the mouths are dripping: "cheap! beautiful girls".

I would do probably the same when I'm 50+, my hair is almost gone, and woke up every morning besides a ugly, falang girl, with a total misplaced superior attitude ("you ugly bastard will never get another woman!") or .. maybe she's shagging the milkman. For these man Thailand can be heaven, after 3 days he buys a Harley, pops a young (22 year) Isaan girl on back the motorbike and he feels like 22 again.

Nothing wrong with that, on the contrary, but come to live in Thailand for some years, then maybe you start to see why you really "love" Thailand, if ever.

I think only Thai love Thailand (98% never saw another country, so not much of a comparison), the farang who are saying "I love Thailand" are basically saying they love the lifestyle and the possibilities they have because they have 10 times more money and they can do things here they only could have dreamed of.

I thank God every day that I'm born in a country where we have freedom of speech, decent education, which gave me the opportunity to travel and work abroad, and I got the opportunity to leave my country! Something most of the Thai can only dream of.

Believe me, when you get to know more alternatives, I will be very surprised if your answer to my question "In an other life, where would you like to be born and to grow up?" will be: "Thailand!".

Well Burg, you have a point of sorts. However I came to Los in Sept for exactly the same reasons as SteveT. Marriage break up, totally out of the blue for me; my job contract ends in Dec and at this stage there is nothing on the horizon. I too basically came to relax, and on an impulse, but fell in love with Los and of course the proverbial bg.

Productivity at work has slowed drastically as I read the threads, and I think SteveT hit the nail on the head in describing it as "fever". The other problem is that there are few with whom you can discuss all this and who understand - one guy at work for me, as he has been to Los many times, but thats all. As I am a teacher by profession, discussing one's activities in the satffroom would not go down all that well. (Whoops bad choice of phrase!) So I totally understand what SteveT wrote and i know exactly where he is coming from.

All l will say....the more trips you have and the more you read......The BIG picture becomes a lot clearer....the the first trip is always the "dangerous" one.

I have to agree with that last line 100%.

Personally speaking I'm agreeing with many points made here, including some well made points by Benjy & Burg.

But I think Benjy only hit on the one subject, the part about SteveT getting carried away over his 1st time experience with thai women. He did seem to be taken in as we all are but we all know the gf experience can seem magical to the 1st timer, but I do think SteveT had other reasons for his post, he had his imagination well & truly captured by the holiday as a whole, as most of us here have also felt.
Phuket does have a great ambience and vibe which is hard to describe.

As for the violence, I do agree that in the trourist areas, fights are pretty rare, but I was referring to the ''underworld'' of thailand. Things that the average tourist don't usually hear about or see. There is a sinister edge to thailand lurking in the background.
I once took a bg from pattaya to patong to show her somewhere new, at first she was interested in a possible move to phuket as she liked the place so much on first impressions, after talking to many locals she changed her mind rapidly and told me she would rather stay in pattaya. When I asked why she replied ''too much mafia here''.
Often is the case, all is not what it seems.

Ally the Milkman calls at the house of married farang lady to collect his money.
As she is broke and can't pay the bill, she lifts up her skirt and says ''can't you take it out of this instead?''

Ally takes a look and says ''have you nothing smaller?''

And hopefully, Ally, she did not look down and say to you "haven't you got anything a tad bigger"555555.

But then as DM says, "Who are you trying to please with that little thing" and DM says "Me".
