Visa Question
Do they do a background check when they issue visas?
I was a bit of a bad boy in the seventies.
Thanks

If you were born in 1972 ,as your profile says , you couldn't have been that much of a bad boy.
I think ,that unless you are applying for resident/long term visa there are no checks. Other BMs may know more about this, as I only ever have tourist visa.

A rich kid smashed my girlfriend- who was on crutches-in the face, and I let him have it. The chickens##t prick got what he deserved, but his rich dad saw to it that I got in a lot of trouble, and I got a criminal record for assault causing bodily harm.
I should have got a medal, but some people do not see it that way.

They can check for criminal records and will throw you out of the country if they catch you with, say, a Spice Girls LP.

Go figure...
I called the thai consulate in Gothenburg yesterday to ask how long my passport needs to be valid after I enter the country since it expires in July next year... I don't know if I made a mistake by asking the lady "do you speak swedish by any chance" coz she immediately changed her tone of voice and after assuring me that the pasport only needs to be valid 6 months after entering the country (Ok for me in other words) I happen to (just in case) ask if I need a visa and she asked me from where I'm and as soon as I answered she said "eeh yes, you need visa" Before calling thou I checked with the Thai embassy in Sweden website and it sayd in bold type that I can enjoy a visa free entry for 90 days... Anyhow she told me I need a passport photo and 100 SEK Today I checked another thai embassy website (in Washington) and it said the same, I can enter without visa and stay 90 days... I called the cansulate again to ask if I need to make an appointment or just drop in and she told me that I can drop in at any time between 10-12... But what made me wonder was that today the price had gone up and the fee is now 200 SEK 5555555, so I decided to get a second opinion and I called the embassy it self and a guy told me the same as the site says, that I don't need any and that I can stay for 90 days...
I'm still trying to figure what's the deal here, if she's simply "guessing things" or if we got things wrong at the beginning and she misundetood me and heard me saying "chinese citizen" coz it sounds alike hahaha In any case I may go there tomorrow and take the day off to talk to her in person and sort this out...

Swedish people do not to my knowledge quailify for visa free 90 day entry.. IIRC only the USA through the treaty on Amnity arrangment has that privelidge..
USA 90 days.. Most Europe and 1st world 30 days.. Some countries 15 days and some countries none.. Thats for VISA on arrival which is a missnomer because its not a visa at all.. These are free and happen on arrival automatically.
The lowest grade of 'real' visa is a tourist visa which is good for 60 days and can get a 30 day extension for 1900 baht at the immigration office..
I suspect asking US and European officals is whats confusing the matter..

Save yourself the time, you misread the site http://www.thaiembassy.se/visa.htm#Where%20to%20Apply
It states quite clearly " List of passport holders from 39 countries that do not require a visa when entering Thailand for tourism purposes if their stay in the Kingdom does not exceed 30 days:" and underneath number 33 in the list of countries is Sweden.
I think you read this by mistake " Chilean citizens enjoy visa free entry for 90 days." Which is written just above.
Of course, all this assumes that you have a Swedish passport, because if you don't them none of this applies in this instance.

Very very unlikely. A mate of mine recently worked in Bangkok for around 15 months and he did porridge for 18 months a few years ago.

Thanks Diz actually I'm Chilean and I think the chick at the consulate misunderstood and heard me saying "chinese citizen" instead of Chilean citizen Well in swedish it sounds sort of alike, take my word for it... And I think I'll just give a damn and trust what the site and the embassy guy told me... Cheers!

As you hadn't said anything to the contrary, I had to assume that you were holding a Swedish passport, but I put in a "saver" at the bottom !!
Have you checked to see if there is a Thai Embassy in Chile and if they have a website ?? This would say for sure what the situation is.

Yes and they had one but it's no longer in use, I checked the site of the Chilean embassy in Bangkok but they say nothing about it, they list the nations that need a visa to enter Chile and to my surprise Thailand is included... IMO they should show the same hospitality and return the nice gesture... I thought of writing an email to the Thai embassy in Chile and pop the question to them as well just to be really on the safe side... I didn't need one when I was there the last time so I doubt I need one now but that damn lady at the consulate made me wonder and I'm still wondering...

Seems to some different answers to this one. On the Thai MFA site, definitely states 90 days
http://www.mfa.go.th/web/12.php
IV. List of countries which have concluded agreement on the
exemption of visa requirement for holders of ordinary
passport with Thailand and permitted to stay for 30 and
90 days
90 DAYS
1. Brazil 2. Republic of Korea 3. Chile
On the thaivisa.com site, its states
Chile : Republic of Chile 30 (Changed 2003-10-13)
