Thailand is in talks with Russia to buy 12 warplanes, with negotiations hinging on whether payment can be made with chicken meat and other farm products, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Tuesday.
"Any success of the deal depends on whether the aircraft sellers are willing to take chicken meat and crops as payment for the purchase," Thaksin told reporters in Sukhothai province. The government is also in talks with Sweden for the purchase of warplanes in exchange for agricultural products, he said.
Thailand has been proposing buying warplanes and other arms from Russia, Sweden and China in exchange for agricultural products in an effort to replace aging equipment and boost farm exports. The government has bought rice and other crops at higher than market prices to boost farmers' income.
The sale from Russia would be the first of its kind for Thailand, which gets most of its weapons from the United States. Thailand tentatively agreed to buy aircraft last year before postponing the purchase after the Asian tsunami last December.
Thailand has sold less chicken meat since January 2004 when a bird flu outbreak prompted the European Union, Japan and other countries to ban frozen raw poultry meat from the kingdom.
Russian officials in February inspected chicken processing plants in Thailand as part of the Thai government's proposal to exchange the meat for Russian fighter jets, Yukol Limlamthong, director general of Thailand's Livestock Development Department said in February.
Thailand will decide whether to buy the Russian warplanes by the end of March, Thaksin said.
