A feasibility study for a light rail system between Phuket International Airport and town indicates viability, and there are plans for a public hearing in March.
The feasibility study for a light rail project on Phuket Island is now 50% in progress. The study is being conducted by 4 agencies with a budget of 17 million baht. The result indicates that the 42 kilometre route linking Phuket International Airport and Phuket town is viable due to engineering and little impact on the environment. Pyramid Development Corporation Managing Director Krai Tangsa-nga, as chairman of the study committee, pointed out that if the project was possible, the project would cost around 500 million to 1 billion baht per kilometre. This is not including stations and spares. The light rail must be able to cope with 5,000 – 8,000 passengers per hour. The committee has scheduled public hearings in March and April before reaching a conclusion by the end of May to determine if the project is viable for development.
