mass dog poisonings
Mystery over ‘mass dog poisonings’ in Patong
PATONG: Residents here are insisting that “up to 100 local dogs” have been poisoned in the middle of the night by people driving around in a Patong Municipality garbage truck.
But Patong Deputy Mayor Chairat Sukbal vehemently denies that the cull has anything to do with the municipality.
Prasert Moonlad, a resident of Nanai Rd in Patong, told the Gazette, “My three dogs died on Nanai Rd. I saw a yellow municipal truck come by and they loaded the dogs onto the truck at around 4 or 5 am. I also saw other dogs dead by the roadside in early January.”
He added, “There are warning notices in the area regarding stray dogs, but our dogs were not strays – they wore collars.”
A volunteer who helps feed stray dogs in Patong said, “Recently, some of [the dogs I feed] were poisoned on Soi Nam Sia. Several people saw the Tessaba an doing this. I have also been informed by friends that this has happened in many other places in Patong as well.”
She continued, “Why do the authorities say they are not going to kill stray dogs but sterilize them instead, and then sneak around at 5 am poisoning them?
“My friend lost two of his dogs to this recent poisoning – they were not even stray dogs.”
However, Deputy Mayor Chairat said, “The Municipality has no policy to kill or poison dogs. It’s possible that they were poisoned by local people as they may have been bothering the residents.”
As to the accusations that a municipal garbage truck was involved, he replied, “Our staff’s responsibility is to collect garbage. They don’t have time to poison dogs.”
He added that he believed the number of dogs that have died was overstated. “It is an exaggeration to claim that 100 dogs h ave died. That would mean that we’d have to have a very large truck to load them all into.
“I stress again that the Municipality has no policy to poison or to kill dogs.” He said that it was possible that the garbage workers had been picking up dead dogs and residents had jumped to the conclusion that the garbage workers were also doing the poisoning.
He added, “We act in co-operation with Phuket Provincial Livestock Office (PPLO) and some dog foundations such as the Soi Dog Foundation to round up and sterilize dogs in the area.”
PPLO chief Sunart Wongchawalit told the Gazette that it is provincial policy not to poison dogs, which was why the PPLO had established its dog pound in Thalang.
He said, “Tambons and municipalities do have the authority to poison dogs but [whether they do so] depends on each [organization’s] policy.”
Meanwhile, in the Layan area, s ome 30 dogs were poisoned recently. Local people told the Gazette that the finger of suspicion pointed toward a goat farmer, but there was not enough evidence to do anything about it.

I read this yesterday and can confirm that in the last few days 2 dogs up by my GF's old room have been poisoned or vanished.. One dog vanished the other very sick and vomiting / frothing at the mouth but not died..
Something does seem odd..

I have kept many dogs in the past so I do not hate animals but anything that does reduce the number of stray, mangy, noisy, flea ridden curs that are a bl**dy pest when you are on a motorbike or just walking along is good thing in my eyes.
If you have a dog, you have responsibilty to keep it under control but the vast majority of dogs roaming the streets are just too motheaten and its obvious that they are not pets.Dogs carry rabies, their sh*t has all sorts of nasty things in it. If your "pet" is roaming the streets then you are not a responsible owner!!!!!

My buddy had a real nice well behaved family pet.. Died in front of his kids foaming at the mouth cause some **** poisoned it.. had to hav been a nieghbour.. The same pricks that smile and wave each morning !!
His new dog they caught a road crew of burmese stealing it (its a pedicgree, worth a months wages to them) actually caught them with it in the back of a truck farther down the road..
I dont like strays either but I have nearly had a few fights with drunk thais stoning or beating soi dogs for no reason..

i would think you would have to be crazy to let your dogs run around LOS if they were not a stray, with all the ticks and diseases teh other dogs must have.
one thing we have to be compassionate about is that these strays did not ask to be strays, and i think the expats and tourist do a great job at takign care of them. jeez, if ilived there full time, id end up with 40 dogs in a few years

When I was back there in November, I remember seeing the BG's at the Sea Dragon getting food for a dog named "Lucy". Lucy seemed to show up at closing time and would get some food from the BG's and sleep there for the night.
The BG's treated the dog as their own, and thought it was good luck to look after Dog.
It's a shame that posioning happens..I hope Lucy wasn't one of them, and will see if she's their when I go back in March.

We sort of adopted a soi dog in Soi Sea Dragon. She was the really friendly white dog named "Keaw" She would disappear all day as she loved playing in the water and the sand down at the beach.
One afternoon she turned up, not in a too good a condition, obviously had been beaten. Now this dog would never have a go at anyone. She needed vet treatment so we took her off to the vets.
I asked my wife about telling the police, and her response was "And what do you expect them to do about it!!" Sad really!!!

Im with you Paul if I was there I would have a collection of dogs. I can understand about the problem of the strays but not their solution. As a pet owner I would be pissed if that happen to my dog.
