The Nation: Hundreds of cabbies protest at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Sparked because a cop fined a cabby for not using the meter. Always surprises in Thailand.

They should all be fined or barred from future work at airport..

I simply cant understand why such an insignificant group can always cause so much trouble and always be pandered to.. Its not liek they are short of people who would work...

Yeah, I thought we were still under military law, barring large gatherings.

Roll a tank over 'em!

Reading the article I actually feel some sympathy for the taxi driver, I'd guess he was taking someone from pattaya to bkk airport and really, is there even one person who's had the meter ON for that trip? It sounds like this allegation of corruption could have some merit in it if it's enough to spark 300 into action. I've read a of couple of times now in trip reports how the 50 baht surcharge wasn't added which seems odd, also the idea that the cops would even bust a guy for this.

taxi fares in bangkok are very low and haven't changed for some 10 years - despite inflation and petrol price rise.

on long distances, out of Bangkok, the driver using the meter would have a little profit, not much more than just to cover cost of petrol/maintanance.

So they should get the law changed to raise their base rates......not try to rip off tourists by not using the meter. It might be just a little money for "rich tourists", but they leave Thailand remembering little rip-offs like that, and many don't come back.

At my office we call the taxi ranks, the Anti-Tourism Authority of Thailand.
