Singapore ship reported accident in int. waters near Phuket

A merchant cargo ship registered in Singapore named ‘Bitumen Glory’ 100 metres long and 15 metres wide, was reported by Singapore authorities to the Thai Royal Navy Third Fleet in Phuket as having a fire on board. The ship was on a bearing of 209 degrees, 60 nautical miles from Phuket. All 19 crew who had to float in the sea for a while had been picked up by a Romanian registered ship named ‘Valeria’. This ship is now heading for either Penang or Singapore. According to its registration it was built in 1985, 22 years ago, but it is not known yet what the ship was carrying. The ship was reported to have had at least 2 previous accidents off the Japanese coast in 2003 & 2006.

Mini-video & text on ThaisNews

The merchant tanker ship that caught fire on Wednesday, 60 nautical miles from Phuket, did not leak any oil into the Andaman Sea, according to Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet’s observation by plane. The Navy’s helicopter also went out to inspect the scene after it caught fire. The ship has not sunk and is still floating at sea. The fire was still burning in the cabin area but was not seen as a severe risk to the marine environment.
