What a crock. Nana Plaza was not even nominated.

Seriously though - I haven't seen the Statue of Christ the Redeemer but I bet it doesn't hold a candle to Angkor Wat.

I think that's a pretty good list to be honest.

I've always found Stonehenge to be quite fascinating - was that a nominee?

If there is one thing not in the same league it is that statue in Rio. It is known only because it is on top of a mountain and you have a fantastic bay under it. Otherwise it is not better than some other statues from Budha, Christ or whoever. Compared to some statues of Michelangelo it is even mediocre. I suppose it landed on that list only because hundred million brasilians voted for it.

Maybe because I am a Christian I find the statue in Rio more awe-inspiring than Angkor Wat.

No one can deny the position of the statue overlooking the city and the bay contributes to its total magnificence.

I respect your religious leanings but I still have to disagree:

75 year old, 38-metre concrete and soap-stone statue with a really really nice view,

vs

800 year old, 820,000-square-metre stone monument built by hand in the middle of the jungle.

im not disagreeing with you, but what does age have to do with it?
i understand an older "wonder" has stood the test of time but i dont think something newer should be dismissed

If "Wonder" is the operative word here, then I'd say age has a lot to do with it. No one "wonders" how the Statue of Christ the Redeemer was built. But how the heck (and why) did the ancient Khmers cart a bunch of ten-ton Legos through the jungle and stack them up so nicely?

I've seen some fine structures, including Borobudur, Pagan and Angkor. Also Maya ans Aztec temples. I rate that higher thad the statue in Rio.
And if you want to bring Christianity in it, although I prefer architecture to be the origin of the choice, not religion, then there are better examples of Architecture than that statue. How about Aya Sofia in Istanbul, which was a cathedral before becomiming a mosqua after the fall of Constantinopel (1453), St Peters in Rome, Notre Dame in Paris...
