However, airline companies normally buy insurance to cover both the aircraft in operation and passengers.

Chantra said foreign passengers usually have their own life and accident insurance, but Thai passengers, who are now being treated at local hospitals, will be able to get compensation from OneTwoGo, which will have to pay hospital bills immediately. The airline can claim those costs from its foreign insurers later.

If that means what I think it means.. Then disgusted..

I thought the same thing. Imagine being one of the injured passenger and being presented with a bill…. Unbelievable. These few survivors have probably lost everything and have nothing left but the cloths on their backs…….This will surly boast Thailand’s image.

Also notice "The airline can claim those costs from its foreign insurers later."..

So let me get this clear.. Any foreigners in the crash have to fend for themselves, pay their own hospital bills (cos a Thai company didnt have its proper insurance) but Thais not only get treated but he immediately comments that they can claim it back from the 'foriegn' insurers..

Sometimes these pricks really are offensive without even knowing it..

I really hope I am miss understanding him or his quote isnt making full sense..

That is how I read it. Like a big screw everyone that isn't thai. I'm sure there is some lawyer that is willing to work this international class action lawsuit. One day they need to learn they can't just disconnect from the rest of the world when it is convenient.

I read it slightly differently.

My take is that the airline hadn't taken out insurance on the Thailand Insurance market. The spokesman didn't know whether the insurance was placed on the foreign insurance markets - because he didn't have the info.

Aviation is a specialised area, and it would be prudent to place insurance in an area where people know and understand the risks. My guess is that the insurance would be placed in London, or somewhere else in Europe.

The article isn't very well written, but maybe a translation. I agree that it makes bad implications, but, I don't think that was the intention. I am sure the Thai Civil Aviation would require insurance to be held.

The plane will have to be insured.. It would be allowed to fly otherwise..

But the fact that the company doesnt have insurance, and the fact that they quite happily insist that Thais get medical cover yet farangs can fend for themselves.. well 12Go isnt getting any of my money.

Govt warns Orient Thai on insurance

(BangkokPost.com) - The Department of Insurance cautioned Orient Thai Airlines this morning that it is fully responsible for compensating victims involved in the crash of Flight OG269 at Phuket, Radio Thailand reported.

News reports have said that Orient Thai has said it carried no insurance on the fatal flight, but promised to compensate Thai victims and their families.

But Radio Thailand's report quoted the Director General of the Department of Insurance, Chanthra Booranarik, as saying Orient Thai Airlines, also known as One-Two-Go Airlines, is responsible for paying for medical expenses and compensation to all victims of the One-Two-Go flight.

Mrs Chanthra affirmed her agency will coordinate in expediting aid to crash victims.

She said regulations were clear: Global civil aviation protocol dictates that airlines must properly insure their aircrafts and passengers onboard.

Orient Thai Airlines is reported to have leased Flight OG 269 from a foreign company, and has procured full insurance for the plane and its passengers, therefore the airline is capable of reimbursing air crash victims for medical treatment and other expenses.

Mrs Chanthra added that if passengers involved in the air crash feel that they are being treated unjustly, they are welcomed to contact the Department of Insurance at 1186, the Radio Thailand report said.

Orient Thai Airlines chief executive officer Udom Tantiprasongchai has also promised to compensate the victims and injured.

Well at least they are holding them on that..

The PM also said they will fully take care of all victims.

Too bad. The message needs to be everyone will get the best care possible and they will sort out paperwork and insurance later. After the tsunami I would have thought they would have better standing orders for mass emergencies.

Projections on the effect on tourism are starting to come out. Perhaps they connected the dots and this gave result to the reversal in policy.

Came up in conversation with my girlfriend. When it was coming from here it was more like "of course they don't need this from the thia government, the foreign insurance is better than anything the government will offer anyway. But thais are poor so they need something now".

So it could just be thais putting foreigners up on the pedestal again.

Frankly we are not used to people being grouped separately so it always comes across really really really bad.

As if the current issues with Thai companies, Visa's, Retirements etc wasn't enough to put the message across that farangs aren't welcome....

I guess they've really put it crystal clear with these latest statements....

Sometimes you do ask yourself the question, why do we put up with this hostility....
