Phuket Plane Crash Analysis Could Take 3 Years

It will take at least six months and perhaps three years to fully analyse data from the "black box" flight recorders taken from the plane that crashed at Phuket Airport last month, claiming 90 lives, a senior official said Monday.

Aviation Department Director General Chaisak Angkasuwan said data decoded from the black boxes, sent to the US more than two weeks ago, had already reached Thailand but an analysis of the data will need at least six months to three years, depending on its complexity, reported the state-run Thai News Agency (TNA).

Thai budget airline One-Two-Go flight OG269 crashed while attempting to land at Phuket Airport in a heavy rainstorm on September 16.

Altogether 89 people died immediately in the McDonnell-Douglas MD 82 crash, with the 90th victim dying recently from severe burns in hospital.

At least two foreign passengers have brought legal suits against Boeing Company, the owner of McDonnell Douglas.

Chaisak said that Boeing Co would be involved by analysing the data pertaining to the aircraft's operation system, a process that could take at least two months.

The One-Two-Go aircraft broke into two sections before bursting into flames in both wings and the body of the plane, after it smashed into an embankment after skidding off the runway. (dpa)

That does not sound too encouraging.

It was pilot error. They said before if it was simply weather then they would wrap it up quickly.

It's not unusual, for the NTSB (in America) to take upwards of 2 years or more, to finally publish their conclusions and accident reports.

BTW...it seems to me, that if they wanted to "wrap it up quickly", the BEST way, would be to simply call it "pilot error".

A story in the Phuket Gazette said the plane that landed 4 minutes before the one that crashed reported "wind shear",and that it was up to the next plane`s pilot`s discretion whether or not he would attempt a landing or not.

But it is almost certain the cause was "wind shear".

He probably shouldn`t have tried to land.

But,it`s all easy after the event, there`s no second chance`s,unfortunately.

no expert by no means. seems obvious that weather and the pilots decision to land was more then likely the cause. poor judgment in someone that was the top pilot for the airline.

i am wondering how much pressure was in his decision not to return because of the cost to the company. having to answer to the corporate bosses when the plane before landed and possibly all the planes that would land after.

if there was wind shear reported. why was the runway not closed???? again traffic controller not wanting to make a decision because of having to answer to management.

i feel quite confident the plane was good to fly. Poor decisions or should i say afraid to make a decision. quite common around here. "up to you".

so many accidents from buses, trains, airplanes, and watercraft happening in this country that should not happen. basically all comes down to the baht, irresponsibilty and no one is held accountable after it happens but then "This is Thailand".

What ever happened to all the problems at the new airport's runway??? quietly gone. Has the airport still gotten its certificate to operate. probably not. just another huge accident waiting to happen.

its pretty much Thailand. don't worry. if it happens not worry. and for sure lets not get to the truth of the problem.
