Pattaya Mail: Baht buses may increase fares

Pattaya baht buses will have to start charging higher fares after the New Year if the price of gasoline continues to rise, the head of their cooperative association has warned.

Appears that it [should] not matter much. Unbeknown, and I am sure many other BM's, the current fare is 5 baht. I always thought it was 10 baht ... and I am sure the operators expects (currently no less from farangs).

Once I took a baht bus to the north end past Soi 1 and around and back to Walking Street. Paid 10 baht and was told the price was double because I went both North and South. I don't dispute that the double price was right, but 10 baht should then have been the fare.

Patong needs this so bad.

It's so obvious - how did they get it to work in Pattaya? Did they not have tuk tuks to start with?

10 baht a trip and dozens of uneeded tuks and their ******** drivers off the streets of Patong.

That`s gotta be about as close to paradise as you can get.

well - that seems to be what is happening midnight. People are walking.

it takes 20-30 minutes to park anywhere in patong because tuk tuks take up all the spaces - there are far more than i ever remember and 90% are stationary and 5% are kerb crawling doing the beepbeep thing.

because they dont have enough business to go round they get less fares and instead of the logical thing of competitive pricing they charge more and the tourists don't seem interested.

I would happily pay 10-20 baht to get around within patong and if the tuktuks operated like the bahtbusses then they would be busier, make more money and ease the parking situation.

Hate to see it, as I love the 10 Baht bahtbus!! Also, I assume that it will also mean the mototaxis will then raise their price.

But with high gas prices, it is understandable. Except you know if the gas prices come down, then they won't lower it!

That is hard to believe, since I have often seen the Thais paying 10 Baht, and not getting change for it. Also, is there not a sign on the back window of the bahtbuses that says they cannot charge more than 10 Baht for fare when they are in public service(can negotiate for whatever they want if they are off-duty, in private service).

The Monger Vans are fun to ride.

I think thats right about travelling north and south and being charged double. They dont like you staying on too long or going too far!

Going to Jomtein is 20 Baht too IIRC.

Dual pricing Lars:

Thai - 5baht (plus Asians maybe??)
Farang - 10 baht

Still cheap at twice the price.

This is from the article linked in OP:

There are more than 700 baht buses in operation in Pattaya, and they have to follow the rate for distances as set by the Department of Land Transportation. This is still the standard fare of 5 baht, and it cannot be increased without the transportation department’s permission.
This is not the first place I have read it.
I'll be there in a week and will continue to pay 10 baht.

Strange cause on pattayacity.com under transportation one can read this:
Fare is 10 or 20 Baht for "In Route" and 50 to 100 Baht after bargaining for a "Hired" ride.

It's probably going to be the most useless post ever, but I couldn't really care whether I pay 10 baht for a ride of sight-seeing along the beach road, or 5 baht less. In a weeks holiday, that's up and down 140 baht, maybe the best investment you can do compared to real other cost issues if one really needs to bring them up.

Those busses are most relaxed and there's no stress in using them, hence, don't get stressed over a baht or two, if that makes sense:-)

In principle I agree with you. 5, 10, 20, even 40 baht would be cheap, however, if all have this "don't care" philosophy Pattaya will soon be like Patong 150, 200, 300 bath for a ride.

True, "don't care" philosophies" are of no help in sustaining the prices.

On the other site, I would say that the Baht busses are a bit in a weak position in that no one is really "depending" on them too much. With a little bit of effort, it all could be done with a walk instead as well.

I've walked numerious times a long the beach from WS down to Soi2. Should you get tired or need a drink, there are many pitstops available.

Let's say, the fair would be 200 Baht, I would walk more often.

The only problem I forsee is a case when I'm a bit too pissed to walk, then I'm in a weaker position:-)

There is just something beautiful about the simplicity of the 10 Baht fare. You jump on , you jump off, you hand the guy a coin and off you go. No muss, no fuss!! Not even a spoken word. Stress-free! Simple! Beautiful!

I think you misunderstood something, I was not refering to your thread as useless since it's interesting, but rather to my own post. Moreover, useless was used a little in an ironic way, not taken too seriously. So, chear up and be happy:-)
