News today about 6 Swedish tourists (including two children) attacked by monkeys on Phi Phi island (Monkey bay) while feeding them.

Something to be aware of.

Phi Phi is sounding more like an adventure every day..if you survive the boat ride over.

This is a very common occurance Nicke, I must have read about this a dozen times and anyone I've ever spoken to that has been to monkey island has seen them attack one or more of the tourists.

Why have they never hired a monkey trickcyclist to ask them why they do it???

I assume that Dodger is referring to Monkey Beach, located in Yongkasem bay on Phi Phi Don.

Getting a bit tired of media style reporting by folks who hear, read, get told by a friend, hear it in a bar or the worst case read it in the media and accept it as truth. Dodger not having a go at you but I worked on Phi Phi for 3 years, many times as tour leader on sunset trips around the island. The first stop was always "monkey beach" on the outside of Tonsai bay (there is no monkey island) and escorted 100's of tourists to the beach to play with and photograph the little rascals. On a very few occasions a tourist got a nip, usually from a youngster chasing the banana waved at them for the photo but then withdrawn for the next shot. Its by no way the norm for all tourists to get attacked. In the many times I was there I saw the group (sometimes 30+) get shirty on very few occasions, and it was always because someone got too close to one of the babies and the troup got protective which I suspect is what has happened in the case of Nicke report.
Anytime anyone wants to go to see for themselves I would be more than happy to introduce them to my mates on monkey beach. No danger if you do it right.

Thanks for your view on the monkeys at Phi Phi Soupdragon. Even so, I appreciate Nicke mentioning the fact that some tourists got bitten. Despite maybe being aware of the fact that they can and do bite on rare occasions, a newbie looking at this post will remember that when he has his young kids with him and be extra cautious. I wouldn't fancy a nip from one of the adults

Point taken absolutely. I know most of the tour guides taking people to the beach on Phi Phi and the last thing they want is anyone, least of all a child, getting hurt on their tour. I have watched all the tour guides on the beach and they are the first to step in should anything happen, but, the bottom line is, they are wild (domesticated by frequent feeding) animals and should be treated as such. Keep small children under very close supervision (the tour guides will make sure you understand this before you go to the beach).

As a foot note. Should the little rascals get shirty the last thing you should do is turn your back on them, that will increase your chance of getting a nip on the a***. Stand your ground, look big and kick sand in their face, trust me they will drop the pretence of being "ard" and back off.

The truth of the matter is that these are not "little rascals" but wild animals , inferring that there is "no danger if you do it right" implies that the 100's (or 1000's) of tourists who visit are given proper 'training' and safety advice.

I , for one , do not place any blame of the monkeys for biting or scratching someone "teasing" them with food or appearing to "threaten" their young. Too often animals are blamed for the stupidity of humans , treating wild animals as some sort of "tourist sideshow" is never in the best interests of the animals.

Edit: Not having a go at anyone , just expressing my personal view.

Exactly. Unfortunately, there are a few clueless parents around who cannot see potential problems like this, and that is when these accidents can occur. Glad to hear the guides are primed for it though.

I've seen one of those very same monkeys swim out to meet a guy who had jumped off a boat near the shore and was swimming towards them....and the monkey gave him a darn good reception

I would advise leaving them to themselves....they are in their own habitat after all.....

Wait till Sir David Attenborough hears about this one.
