The statement from the airline said the this was a dangerous manoeuvre and the pilots weren't trained in that.
I find that hard to believe. Some years ago I was on a flight out of LAX where the landing gear was questionable. We did a low fly by twice for the people on the ground to look at the gear with binoculars. We weren't as low as the Cathay Pacific plane in this story (28 feet), but likely about 100 feet. I suppose we were going a little slower too, even though it seemed fast. I would think that pilots would be very trained in such action. It was a large plane as well (MD-11 or DC10). Thanks for the clip Lars.
Wow! I didn't realize that he was that low. After seeing this, I have to say that I believe the Captain used poor judgement, in flying that low with a load of passengers, or dignitaries. Not poor enough to get him fired though...maybe a forced vacation and a serious "talking to".

Im no pilot but im sure they are trained for every emergency situation that can occur while flying, i know this wasnt an emergency but like MrDK's flight it can happen.. Especially this bloke with that much experience im sure he'd be trained or maybe even been in an emergency situation as a fly by.... So i think Cathay just needed something to cover themselves up.. Well thats my opinion anyway.....

Used to live on the Cocos Keeling Islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Really is in the middle of nowhere but with a Military rated airstrip and we occaisionally used to get the US boys in the FA 18's blasting over from Diego Garcia ( another group of Islands in the middle of nowhere) and doing "blast runs" of the runway cause they knew they were in the middle of no-where and could get away with it. The ultimate run was an FA 18 upside down and no more than 30 feet off the deck at full throttle. He took out about 20 windows on the island and the Sh*t did hit the fan over that one.
And then one day some peanut decided they would try and get a P3 Orion to bank real hard after a short run takeoff. Into the drink she went and the fun and games really slowed down after that...

And, more than likely, one of the desk the pilot was flying for the rest of his (abbreviated) military career. Regarding the OP, I suspect this captain will not lose all his retirement benefits. These Old Guard pilots are held in very high regard among their lower-hour brethren. Funny, I worked with the #1 seniority pilot at a major US airline, refuelled his plane at least weekly. The most mellow cat you can image. Of course he had very little left to prove. I kept kidding his First Officers about, "You keeping this new captain out of trouble?"
