Seriously, were I paid to come up with a plan to damage the tourist industry in Phuket I could not have come up with a better idea....take an isolated tragic incident, throw in a knee jerk reaction and highlight the negatives over and over again....every time someone sees one of those damn whistles it will evoke memories of this poor girls murder (call me old fashioned but why not highlight that the case is all but solved - swift justice and all that).

i don't know if this story was anywhere else but in OZ....but i, being a female in phuket by myself at the moment (husband over in Oz) i have had this story forwarded to me now 3 times so far today from concerned friends and rellies.

It is the most crazy thing they could have done in their attempt to 'protect' the tourism industry in phuket. I would be a bit freaked out presented with a safety whistle upon arrival....and the story of it has freaked out any number of potential visitors. Madness.

Yeah right...
Its very easy for a middleage woman comming on a 2 weeks holiday in Phuket to get hold of a gun.... Get real....

What happened was a tragic thing, and she didnt deserve it even if she was topless or not. Its a 3rd world country, and being in a remote area is a gamble how beautiful it all may be... Sad but true...

I am not sure what it is your not buying..

If a bar girl goes to the police about a sexual attack.. Do you think the police giver her thier full attention ?? Or do you think they pretty much ignore her ??

Because I know which one happens 90% of the time sadly.

No. But I would feel very guilty if I didn't explain the importance of local customs and senstivities, to her and she got arrrested, scamed, murdered. At 28, she was maybe too old for a father to tell her whats acceptable.

The poor women was just very unlucky to run in to the wrong person/group while doing this in a 'isolated' area.

As others have said. It is not a developed western country with the same norms and customs as her native land. Would she of gone to an Musliem nation and wondered around without what is considered normal to their way of dress? I dont think she would. The outward 'openness' of tourist centres such as Patong and Pattaya, maybe gives people (but women in particular) a false view of whats considered acceptable in Thailand as a whole.

Its a whole different case to the 15yr raped and murdered in Goa and couple of weeks back. Her mother defies belief, and should have major thoughts to her self about her 'fitness' to raise kids and lead a Hippy lifestyle in 3rd world country.

its pretty simple
Phuket wants to attract international tourists

they have to do a much better job of protecting them, regardless if that person studied up on the customs

why do you think 4 thai guys are so brazen to attack a tourist in broad daylight?
because the police are crap at best

Yes the police are crap at best.. but thats equally (in fact possibly moreso) true of crime to thier own nationals.. Its the usual 3rd world 'you pay peanuts.. you get etc' situation..

Thai police.. The best police force money can buy !!

but brings me back to my original point
if they want to reap the rewards of international tourism, and they are not targeting piss poor backpackers, they need to provide a capable police force

There is no death penalty for being topless on a beach. I hope the police can find out who killed her.

IMO we will never in our life time see a non corrupt or an adequate police force in Thailand. Nor will the government implement any rational plan for the people in general to reap any significant profit from international tourism. Why? Because the top governmental and/or people in political offices are too busy lining their own pockets. There way of business simply trickles down (Reagonomics) to the lowest common denominator which in this instance is the police force. It's politics at its finest as in tell the public what they want to hear and then do whatever the fcuk they want.

I remember reading in the Bangkok Post when the King acknowledged (for lack of a better word) the new cabinet members along with the current PM and this is not a quote but close "Try and not be corrupt". I mean come on, a large percentage of these chaps have ongoing investigations, actual charges filed against them and in some cases convictions. But guess what? The Thai populace ELECTED them into office.

So what makes anybody think that things are going to change or even get better in any short period of time? The guys in office who are sharp aren't thinking about the safety aspects of women or even men for that matter in Thailand while on vacation. They have much bigger agendas at hand which is the next business deal that profits them. So who is left at the switch? Some moron with the idea that a whistle will aleviate the problem.

I remember a while back getting flamed for suggesting that the Thais were perhaps none too bright for chasing away people who are legitimately on extended holiday and bringing (loads of)foreign money into Thailand by their increasingly restrictive tourist visa policy. Well we have another example of the Thai intellect with the whistle for women tourists initiative. I just can't help myself...I have to say it..."That is really stupid!" OK, flame away.

Crime on the 15th

Strong lead by the 17th (no forensics - just old-fashioned foot work)

Offender in custody by the morning of the 19th

I wish the police in my part of farangland could match this "crap" performance.

My compliments to the Royal Thai Police Force on a job well done.

PHUKET CITY: After a regional manhunt for the killer of Swedish tourist Hanna Charlotta Backlund, 26, whose body was found at Mai Khao Beach on Saturday, police have arrested and charged with murder their prime suspect after he gave himself up in Ranong province early this morning.

Region 8 Police Deputy Commander Maj Gen Tavat Boonfueng led a team to Ranong to bring Akkaradej Tunkae, 31, back to Phuket, arriving at Tah Chat Chai Police Station in a police van at 5:30 am, it was announced at a press conference this morning.

Akkaradej allegedly told police that he had watched Miss Backlund and her friend Emma Stenman at Mai Khao Beach for three days until on Saturday he spotted Miss Backlund sunbathing alone.

He approached Miss Backlund from behind, with a kitchen knife in his right hand taken from his home in Thalang, police said.

He grabbed Miss Backlund by her throat with his left hand and, when she attempted to break free, he stabbed her in the neck, stomach and side of her body, police added.

After rushing to his home on his motorcycle, he cleaned the knife and hid it in a closet before he changed his clothes, said police.

On Sunday morning, Akkaradej and his daughter traveled by bus to a relative’s home in Chumphon province, police told reporters.

After hearing media reports that police had spoken to locals and were moving in on a prime suspect in the murder, Akkaradej left his daughter in the care of his relative and traveled to a friend’s home in Ranong, said police.

Akkaradej called his wife and father and told them where he was, which the pair then relayed to police. Last night at Tah Chat Chai Police Station, Akkaradej’s father persuaded him during a phone conversation to give himself up, said police.

With Akkaradej’s wife and father present, police took Akkaradej into custody in Baan Tublee, Ranong province, at 1:35 am.

Lt Gen Thanee Thawisri, commander of Royal Thai Police Region 8, said, “The knife has been found and will be sent to Surat Thani for testing. We will have the results of DNA tests soon and will take samples from the suspect’s clothes, finger nails and tissue.”

Akkaradej said, “I feel bad about everything that has happened. The night after I did it I went back to my home and cried. I feel hurt and sad for [Miss Backlund’s] family and also for my family. I accept everything that I did because I feel pity for my own daughter.”

The case will be sent to court within one month, said police.

The 100,000-baht reward offered by local businesses for information leading to the arrest will be given to Akkaradej’s wife and father, police added.

Christina Palm, acting Swedish consul, told reporters, “I am very happy that the police arrested the suspect so quickly. I would like to thank all the officers involved in this case.”
