Many people don't know how many lovely, beaches there are here all over the island, why go to Patong with the gf?

Crappy sewage water!

i enjoy all the beaches but i have to say last August, Patong was looking pretty ok
again, doesnt hold a candle to Karon or some of my other favorites, but still ok beach

Got me beat with your answer, cos cannot understand what you are saying.

A thai lb stops you in the street and asks you what? go back to loom? which cultural law have they just broke? is it not allowed or found disrespectful if a lb asks these questions? do not say prostitution is illegal, she hasn't said for money yet.

A girl sunbathes topless on a beach, topless sunbathing is disrespectful and a thai child would be taught that this is not expected or acceptable behaviour for a thai person, against their cultural upbringing.

Do you disagree with this?

A visa run to Ranong yes perhaps..

But really the tourist zones of Phuket / Samui / Patts / Etc.. Well they are Thai lite at best (or worst perhaps).. Its a long way and a rapid pace of change from Thai norms of even a decade ago..

Do not agree with you, based only on the point I was trying to make. It has been on other threads and is to some extent on this one, seeming to be said, because Patong is commercialised then every thai who lives there is not a normal Thai, and normal upbringing and teachings are no longer applying to these people. Why not? what teachings culturally does Bee not adhere to or believe in now?? all of them??? so a Thai is no longer going to find a topless sunbathing woman disrespectful now because they live in Phuket??? she will now go topless sunbathing herself with no shyness or feelings of guilt??

Many people are still living the same lives here on Phuket that they have done for more than just the last 10 years. There is a rapid pace of change but is this affecting their culture, their beliefs, their upbringing, is it okay now to touch them on the head, to shout at them, to make fun of the king or to not stand for the national anthem?? not noticed these things have changed nor differ from up north!!!

!

i guess my point would be to question why they find a topless women so disrespectful but dont find aggressive lb prostitues roaming their streets and accosting people disrespectful or even girls dancing on a bar or screaming for men to come into a bar
they seem to condone all those
so what part of thai culture is it disrespectful to go topless? i would say it falls under a sort of culture of shyness and discretion?
so wouldnt all those other actions fall under the same cultural norms?

you are completely right that the thai's living in phuket, even the ones that migrated here have a right to their beliefs and cultural norms even if it is an area built on tourism
but dont you think choosing to be offended by bare breasts but not choosing to be offended by bg's actions or lb actions sort od hypocritical?

It is Culturally insensitove in Thailand to expose your body in public when bathing etc.. Oddly tho in rural Thailand washing in the stream semi naked isnt.. Hard to explain exactly why but I think I see the difference.

And Dodge is clearly losing the plot if he cant see that aggressive transgendered prostitutes roughly propositioning for sex trade isnt against thai morals and 'normal' Thai culture..

I'm not sure about losing the plot cos not sure I ever had it in the first place. But I see this whole thing 'culture' as a very deep and extremely hard thing to fully understand or even easily describe. First thing we all do, is analyse it using our western mindset logic and values.

Thais seem to fully accept transgender, homosexuality, incest, rape which in so many ways seems so alien to the other sides of their culture. I have heard explanations for this and still cannot fully come to terms with it.

Alex running around naked is totally okay, but then he is only 19 months, this is okay in our culture, but an unrelated female will openly touch his willy and even examine it, this in mixed company and totally acceptable to them. But if he strokes or touches another childs head, they all rush up, tell him off nicely, and really look so concerned, 'what a baby has just stroked another baby's head'??

A 22 year old cousin is openly gay, but will kiss other males in front of the family members, or try it on with straight guys, nothing is said, no one bats an eyelid.

These reasons I put the two acts, the LB and topess sunbathing, in different cultural groups of acceptance, wow!! see I told you at the beginning it was going to be hard for me to explain my thoughts, why ever did I get involved in this thread???

so cant we agree that maybe there is some hypocriscy in their culture and views, just as any other place in the world??

i love phuket, enjoy the nightlife, enjoy the company of some of the farangs at various times.
my comment about "dull" being good, was only to signify that the more polite thai/farang behaviour is more pleasing to my senses, than the excesses of cultural insensitivity.

no doubt if that poor girl had been wandering around nakon nowhere topless the same thing probably would have happened.

Don't like agreeing with you too often Paul!!!!, but heck, yep I totally agree, there is so much hypocrisy, which is why it is so damn hard to understand or make any sense out of any of it.

Problems on Koh Samui too. Aussie girl raped there wednesday.

Police arrest rape suspect
Friday March 28, 2008

SURAT THANI : Calls from a stolen mobile phone led to the arrest of a former convict yesterday on charges of raping an Australian tourist at a resort on Koh Samui on Wednesday.

Somchai Duanglai, 26, a native of Sakon Nakhon, was arrested at a rented house near Samui airport, Pol Lt-Gen Thani Thawitsri said.

The suspect has been charged with raping a 20-year-old Australian woman at Somwong House Resort on Liab Hat Chaweng road.

The victim was sleeping alone in her room when a man broke in about 5am on Wednesday and held her at knifepoint before raping her.

Mr Somchai allegedly fled with the victim's passport, a mobile phone, cash and the victim's shoulder bag.

The arrest came after police traced the suspect's whereabouts by monitoring calls made from the stolen phone.

Mr Somchai denied raping the victim; however, DNA evidence showed otherwise.

The victim also identified Mr Somchai as the man who raped her.

There are a few words you can't say, such as ****, ***, *****, ***, ****, etc. The reason is not to make words visible to search engines (Google namely). Substitute one letter, such as "W" for "VV" or "O" for "0" and you are golden. VV
