Singapore & US Navy ships visiting Phuket
According to Thai Royal Navy, the 3 ships anchored in Patong Bay were from Singapore Navy.
3 more ships from US Navy just arrived off Deep Sea Port, Ao Makham, south east coast, this morning, and approx 1200 sailors including female, started to make R & R visits around island, plus 2 charity visits to school in Kamala and Life Home Project for AIDs victims this weekend.
We have an interview with their 3 commanders to be shown on Monday April 7' s Andaman News program at 8.30am, on NBT (renamed from TV channel 11) VHF dial and later that day on National News Bureau Public Relations Department (& สำนักข่าว กรมประชาสัมพันธ์......ThaisNews ประจำวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 3 เมษายน 2551 which will be phased out end of April).

would have been good to see.
We recently had a navy ship docked here.
It was from Perth, and i missed the viewing time, but still was good to look at on the outside.

Their 1,250 sailors took R&R leave for a 4 day visit to Phuket, while ships anchored off Ao Makham, as Commander James first tells us about their courtesy call on the Royal Thai Navy at Cape Panwa, last Thursday: ……. Special - Volunteer crew from USS Hopper, American Navy help at Life Home Project, Phuket
To see or download mini-video, go to ThaisNews
We are from USS Hopper, an American Navy ship, visiting Phuket and helping out at Life Home Project for AIDS victims. Our group of sailors came over to the Life home Project in ko Sirey island, east of Phuket town, to help the AIDS & HIV victims living in the compound. We presented medical and toiletries products like plasters, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap & napkins, all from America, for the women and babies here. We presented them the Project Manager of Life Home Project, khun Rattakhet Phongpud, and Rasada Sub-district leader, together with Rotary Club of Patong members Brad & Woody who also gave out his famous cookies to everyone. We also helped plant mango fruit trees and other trees and plants to help provide food and shade. As it is the water festival or Songkran next week, we also cooled ourselves off, spraying each other.
We all feel this is a way of giving back to local communities we visit, not just R&R or Rest & relaxation. We learnt more about Life Home Project center’s work and care, including how the make handicrafts to give occupations and be more self supporting. We won’t forget the women and children here and hope to visit again next time we come to Phuket. Our ship’s motto is “Dare & Do” – we dared and did it today! Now we hop back to our ship USS Hopper. Aloha, Bye Phuket! ( www.hopper.navy.mil Life Home Project - Helping Children in Thailand Rotary Club of Patong Beach, Phuket, Thailand )

Perhaps, but I read 1200 including (a) female.
Nonetheless I am sure her (the ladies) R&R will be different, and not same-same.

Well, they have barely been visible. Wonder if it was 1200 women on these ships.

I seem to remember last time the US navy were in town I noticed more MPs than I did sailors. I think they let them ashore in smaller groups and they are given strict instructions as to their code of behaviour. Not lke a few years ago when the decended on Bangla and it was mayhem, kinda miss that it was a good laugh particularly in Shark Club later on with all the naked crowd surfing (girls that is).

They are on a very short leash whilst here, with curfews, etc. Any misbehaviour results in confinement to ship at next port. When U are at sea for 2 months plus its not a privilige one would want to lose IMHO. When I was at Faulties all they wanted to do was eat- 3 or 4 portions and some to take back with them. Not big drinkers like the Brits or Aussies (not that the RN is likely to get a ship to stagger this far around the world again!) and they didn't seem to bring girls past either. The get fairly concise briefings on what is and is not considered acceptable behaviour when ashore. Most of them I talked to were scared sh*tless of contracting STDs after the horror story briefings as it could harm their careers. The better approach was a no questions asked STD clinic that the Brits (allegedly!) ran in HK years ago. All they wanted to know was where and when peeps got a dose, then no further action and anonymous (each case recorded by a number not name.

come to think of it I haven't seen a crowd of drunken sailors in town for many years....are they avoiding my visits or does it just not happen anymore.....
yeah shark and the gogos (when they actually were gogos) were a real hoot in the old days when the navy was in town......I remember one gogo dancer trying to explain to a darker sailor that she couldn't handle the "chocolate" man in Tinglish....her hands were indicating about a foot in distance and she was laughing her head off...he unfortunately couldn't see the funny side of it....

Werent there a batch of Brits stationed in Afghanistan here over the weekend? At least thats what they told me. Anyway, they were basically taking over the northern part of soi Tiger and were dancing shirtless on the bars. Ah well, the BGs seemed to enjoy themselves.

Could part of the explanation be the Navy's zero or near zero tolerance policy on blood/alcohol when the sailors return to ship.
Not exactly sure of the policy for the navy, but most maritime companies have adopted a zero alcohol policy after the Exxon Valdez accident.

Someone maybe can confirm this, but I was told by a US marine 2 years ago that they all get a breathalyzer test for alcohol when returning to the ship. They can drink but if they are over a limit there are serious consequences. Also, if caught having sex they are subject to a court martial. Being kids I am sure that many do and dont get caught.
The Marines that I saw in Pattaya were better behaved then I was.

I don't doubt that, but are they allowed to board the ship again while still under the influence.

Yeah, thats why I wonder what happened. It was actually fun those days and I never had any problems with them either, and was a good addition in low season for us.

Still not sure what the navy rules are, however, two incidents over the past few years have indeed put a damper on certain activities involving alcohol.
One was after member of the US Navy stabbed a taxi driver to death in Japan and another was after an incident where a [parking] attendant was punched by a navy member in Singapore.

Don't see the problem there if I was prone too violence taxi (tuk tuk) drivers and parking attendents would be top of the list for some pain.
