I am constantly amazed at the small minded petty; we know what we are doing etc attitue from the guys in charge in Thailand.

As bad as the count of 143 is, it would be nice to know what it stands in relation to in order to fully gauge it.
All of the Songkran days are holidays and the count is shy of 50 per day. What is the count on an average Saturday? What is the count per day on other holidays? Don't really expect anyone here to know, but to make a valid argument it should be.

The current count is.. ------------------------------------ Songkran death toll rises to 180 BANGKOK: -- A total of 76 people were killed and 1,103 others were injured in road accidents on Sunday, the third day of the 7-dangerous-day of Songkran festival, the Road Safety Monitoring Centre announced Monday. Jaral Phakdeethanakul, permanent secretary for Justice Minister who is an official of the road safety centre, said 1,018 road accidents happened Sunday. He said the accumulated death toll of the three first day of the seven dangerous period rose to 180. He said 2,238 accidents happened from Friday to Sunday, in which 2,514 people were injured. The Dec/Jan (new year) figures were a bit of an eye opener for me. Even though I would assume the figures would be higher, it is still far higher than I would have expected.

Banning alcohol sales will have little (if any) affect on # of deaths - the Thai's can easily brew their own rice liqueur and if you look at where the fatalities are highest it is the hickville towns - not tourist spots in particular.
Songkran is too long - 7 days holiday is inviting this mass lunacy - far better would be to reduce the Songkran holiday to 2 days (as is the New Year proper) then the likelihood of Thai's sinking into a 7 day alcoholic stupor would be diminished - and would give a shot in the arm for the nation's productivity. An alcohol ban would also result in a hoarding of booze before the holiday - for both Thai's and tourists - such attempts at prohibition however well intentioned would not result in the desired effect IMO.

The only ones hurting are the establishments and the tourists. More police checkpoints would be the only solution. And checking for drunk drivers ALL YEAR AROUND. Now there's an idea. Point would be to TRY changing the mentality.

All the road rules have to be enforced before there is going to be a significant fall in the road toll. Don't drink and drive, everyone on a bike should wear a proper helmet, not an icecream container, give way to pedestrians on zebra crossings, don't speed, stop at red lights, don't remove the seatbelts from taxis, one car per lane, a taxi license is not a F1 license ...
It's not fcuking rocket science. Life is too expendable in SE Asian countries. Lose a kid - just have another baby to replace it.
