Microsoft tried that with "Windows Live" and I believe they paid a fortune for the Live.com domain name which really didn't increase the numbers of users from Hotmiail/MSN.
Wikipedia has commitments to other organisations (Creative Commons for one) that MS cannot or would not be able to keep so purchasing them would be a bad move for MS. As for Baidu, While MS's internet division has been trying to make inroads into the Asian market they still don't have a large enough foothold in the western markets (as in not making a profit).
Part of me thinks that this was one big pump and dump scam that backfired on MS rather than a legitimate attempt at a take over.
